And Then I saw "Osama"
March 5, 2004 | The Beloved Deb

Posted on 03/05/2004 11:48:54 PM PST by Deb

The last couple of weeks had been pretty darn exciting here in Hollywood. There were lots of awards ceremonies to go to, dresses and shoes to pick out, parties to swirl through and bulging Goodie Bags to drag home. I watched as Paris Hilton accidently walked into a koi pond at a star-studded, pre-Oscar party.

Yep, life at my house was good...and then I saw "Osama".

Now, when I say "life at my house was good", I don't mean perfect by any means. Oh, no. The carpet people who were supposed to bring carpet samples by, completely forgot about us. And I was having trouble with the convertible top on the new T-Bird. then there was the fact that I had been on the waiting list at the Beverly Center for the new multi-colored Louis Vuitton bag for over a year and hadn't heard a peep from them. But, on the plus side, my beloved had won a Screen Actors Guild award and Jude Law had told me my earrings were "Cool" at the BAFTA tea, so I was feeling awfully self-satisfied...and then I saw "Osama".

It devastated me. It chewed me into tiny pieces and spat me on the floor. I don't think I'll ever be the same and neither will you.

Describing the simple story of a little girl forced to become a boy named "Osama" in order to support her destitute mother and grand-mother, will not be enough, I know, to make you put down whatever you're doing and find this movie, but that is exactly what every adult citizen of America should do. Now.

"Osama" is the first film allowed to be filmed in Afghanistan since the over-throw of the Taliban. And if you know someone who has doubts about our actions there, drive them to this movie and buy them a ticket. They won't want popcorn or Milk Duds so you'll be able to save money that you'll need for Kleenex and smelling salts before it's over.

I won't tell you more of the story or even anymore of the plot, but if "Osama" hasn't made it to your town, you can buy it at Amazon.com in April. Buy it. If you have teen-agers, make them watch it. I'm sure that, like me, you and your children will look at your full refrigerator, then at each other and thank God.

You'll also want to sell everything you have and give the money to the brave souls who suffered (and I mean suffered) under the horror that is radical Islam, until the President and the people of America set them free.

I was still haunted by this movie when I read a tiny article about President Bush advising Americans to see "Osama" if they want to understand what we're fighting for.

Amen, Mr. President.

Thanks. We searched the web, when we got home, for any morsel of info on the movie and pulled up that site, but the "Osama" page didn't go anywhere and sorta died. I should try it again.

It's been out for a month and only grossed a bit over $440K. Perhaps they made a naming mistake?

Well, most Americans won't watch a subtitled foreign-language film. (lol)

Osama gets her name from a classmate, the street urchin seen in the film’s opening, who protects her from a group of marauding boys who question her masculinity by declaring that her name is Osama. The name is symbolically right on a couple of levels. First, it’s associated with feared terrorist Osama bin Laden, figurehead of the Taliban’s sugar daddies, Al Qaeda; second, it’s a common name that can be applied to both male and female children.

Do you're friends a favor - let them know that tarring & feathering has *not* been taken off the table for the Hollyweirdo's. A few will be made in "object lessons" for the rest. America is sick & tired of the sex & violence and weary of hearing cartoonsih political rants from ignorant fools who never graduated high school. They are trained monkeys, time for them to shut up and sing. No problems here with their right to free speech, but translating your star power into a political platform is unethical to say the least.

A significant majority of Americans are fed up and almsot to the point of dragging the likes of Alec & Kim out into the streets for a good tar & feathering. If you have friends in the movie industry that you care about - warn them to stand clear.

You're exactly right, it was a terrrible idea to use that name for the title and I'm sure that's why so few people are see it. But it's based on a real pre-9/11 story and maybe that was the child's real name. That's the only thing I can figure.

I have made it a mission to spread the word on this movie and I hope everyone here will do the same.
