Osama gets her name from a classmate, the street urchin seen in the films opening, who protects her from a group of marauding boys who question her masculinity by declaring that her name is Osama. The name is symbolically right on a couple of levels. First, its associated with feared terrorist Osama bin Laden, figurehead of the Talibans sugar daddies, Al Qaeda; second, its a common name that can be applied to both male and female children.

You're exactly right, it was a terrrible idea to use that name for the title and I'm sure that's why so few people are see it. But it's based on a real pre-9/11 story and maybe that was the child's real name. That's the only thing I can figure.
I have made it a mission to spread the word on this movie and I hope everyone here will do the same.
