CBS: Parents Must Protect Kids from Football Violence

CBS: Parents Must Protect Kids from Football Violence (2004-02-02) -- Executives at Viacom, the parent company of CBS and MTV, this morning reacted with surprise at complaints about partial nudity, off-color commercials and flag desecration during the halftime show of last night's Super Bowl.

"We produce age-appropriate programming," said an unnamed Viacom spokesman. "Parents must protect their children from violent sports. That's why we broadcast the Super Bowl early Sunday evening, when most children will be at church services or working on homework and getting to bed early. What kind of parents allow their kids to stay up after 8 p.m. on a school night to view violent sports?"

The CBS-MTV production included... -- Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson groping each other and simulating sexual activity, topped off by Mr. Timberlake ripping Ms. Jackson's outfit to reveal her breast. -- Performing artist 'Kid Rock' wearing an American flag with a hole in it as a poncho -- Rapper 'Nelly' gripping his crotch through most of his performance -- Two commercials depicting damage to men's groins -- a car commercial where children express awe using an interjection which combines the sacred with the scatalogical -- at least two commercials for medicine to treat male sexual dysfunction -- a beer commercial featuring flaming equine flatulence -- a program promo where a young boy expresses awe at seeing a woman in red, lacy underpants.

The spokesman said Viacom will devote several million dollars of broadcast time this year to public service announcements urging parents to protect their children from "the devastating effects of viewing violent sports."

I don't care if Janet wants to dance nude while biting off the head of a bat - she can do it with her own kind. Why force it on conservatives?

Why are conservative parents forced to see an old hard-looking two bit whore type strip while we're watching football with our families?

Forced viewing is the new liberal "edgy" thing? How totalitarian.

Why are conservative parents forced to see an old hard-looking two bit whore type strip while we're watching football with our families? Let her perform for her fellow liberals.

So they want us to believe they had no demographics on their audience and not notice that they think that after a certain age, anything goes.

Lame.

That's why we broadcast the Super Bowl early Sunday evening...

Besides all the other, "leave me alone I want to do what I want" rhetoric, get a clue Mr. Viacom spokesman. The game started at 6:25 PM eastern, that's 3:25 pacific, hardly early Sunday evening, more like late Sunday afternoon.

Performing artist 'Kid Rock' wearing an American flag with a hole in it as a poncho

For the record (and I am not a fan -- not at all), Kid Rock was attempting to be patriotic. He's spoken on behalf of Bush and of the troops regularly.

What is most interesting is that none of the complaints have to do with the actual game.

"Why are conservative parents forced to see..."

Unless your channel dial is super-glued and immovable, you weren't 'forced' to watch anything. That halftime show had nothing to do with football and I simply turned to FoxNews during halftime. I had no idea what I ended up missing, but, having seen boobs before, didn't appear to miss much.

I suggest turning the TV off or to something else next SuperBowl halftime, which hasn't had a watchable halftime show in years.

But noone was forcing you to watch anything.

"What kind of parents allow their kids to stay up after 8 p.m. on a school night to view violent sports?"

Attention: Due to a phenomenon known as "Pacific Standard Time", many of these parents were watching 'violent sports' at 5 p.m.

It was around noon, in Hawaii.

So what I hear Viacom saying is football is a violent game and we should be ashamed of ourselves for watching it. Therefore, showing nudity during the halftime is entirely acceptable.

What a load of crap.

I think the NFL should look at their AFC contract with CBS and see if this incident qualifies as a breach of contract. If it does then they should tell CBS that they will be looking for another station to air their games.

a car commercial where children express awe using an interjection which combines the sacred with the scatalogical --

The only commercial I caught was the 'horse flatulence.' What's this one about????

We were switching over to Jumping Jack Flash on WGN during most of the half time show. We really weren't going to sit there and watch that junk put out by MTV.

I think the problem is the lack of true talent in Hollywood. Compare the singing, dancing, and musical instrument capabilities of Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Dinah Shore, and the rest of the actors from the 50's and 60's with the current crowd. No, don't, there really is no comparison.

They sure do like to hold gala events patting themselves on the back for how wonderful they are!

But You must remember that the "world revolves around EST" or so they think over there.

I avoided this whole stupid bowl thing anyway, I'm waiting for the real sports to start-NASCAR!!!!!

I get it. It doesn't matter what he did with the flag last night, because he's pro-Bush and pro-troops.

Kinda like that stupid Subway ad yesterday: "It's OK; I eat at Subway."

How far does your twisted logic go? If he has marched an Iraqi Republican Guard soldier up on stage and slapped him around, would that be OK, because, after all, he supports Bush and the troops?

What material does MTV consider age appropiate viewing during the family hour(8 to 9 p.m.)?
