I don't purport to speak for Pukin Dog but I assume that it was not his intent to insult our brethren in the UK and other members of the Commonwealth. People will risk their lives and break the law to get here to see what this whole American dream thing is about. I don't think his comments were aimed at your countymen or yourself. I notice all your examples are places that are (or were) part of the British Empire-- and I approve.

Actually, we are all part of one great "be-all and end-all that includes Scotland, England, Wales, both of the Irelands, Australia, the US, Canada, New Zealand (a little left these days, but they have to be counted). And so many other places (islands, mainly) that at one time had some close involvement with Great Britain. No human being or country is perfect, but the British, in general, left a magnificent legacy of freedom-loving people. We can recognize the petty corruption or tyranny that existed from time to time in one place or another, as well as some mistakes made in the course of dismantling it empire, but overall the British Empire was a force for good.

I think that a lot of our appreciation for the rights of the individual comes from our British heritage. British subjects were subject to gov't impositions (some reasonable and some unreasonable), but never willingly yielded all power to the State in the same way that the French and Germans so often did.

On the other hand, there are very nearly as many Cubans, Mexicans, Peruvians and Salvadorans, and whether or not they envy us, they sho'nuf' wanna' be here!
