This is a tragedy for everybody. Dead child and dead dog.

The dog was confined in it's own yard. They are animals with a high prey drive even if they are not raised to fight.

A chained animal is more dangerous than a loose one. Lunging against a tight tether just fires them up.

There are no dogs whatsoever in the history of mankind that are worth one child's life.

No, but you can sure blame people who insist on having those "peace-loving" dogs around.

We have 4 dogs and 4 cats, so it's not something against animals that I have. It's breeds that have been BRED to kill. People can yap on all they want, but pit bulls should be outlawed!

That poor baby. And the mama. She'll grieve for her child until the day she dies. And feel heavy guilt, because she didn't watch her child like she should have.

I know one thing, it wouldn't have taken me TWO HOURS to report my little one as missing. I had one of my own toddlers disappear one time. He'd gone behind the dryer to go to sleep (it was pulled out from the wall due to remodeling). I guarantee you I learned my lesson after that. I made sure I knew where my kids were at all times, even when they were in the HOUSE!

From our local news (WRAL-TV, Raleigh NC)--

Harnett County 3-Year-Old Killed By Dog

Deputy Shoots Chained Dog

POSTED: 10:04 p.m. EST January 13, 2004
UPDATED: 12:47 p.m. EST January 14, 2004

Investigators in Harnett County believe a 3-year-old boy who was found dead in a neighbor's back yard Tuesday night was killed by the neighbor's dog.

Nathan Hill

The sheriff's office said its initial investigation appears to indicate that Nathan Roy Hill, of Bunnlevel, wandered into a neighbor's yard and into the reach of a pit bull mixed breed that was chained. The dog attacked the boy, killing him.

The boy's body was found just before 6:30 p.m. on Doris Drive in the Anderson Creek community.

Christy Gambill said her son was last seen two hours earlier, playing outside. When Gambill could not find her son, neighbors stared searching. They did not look near the dog, since she said Nathan was scared of it. Then Gambill called 911.

A responding officer found the boy's body next door near the 80- to 90-pound dog. The deputy shot the dog to get to the boy's body.

A second dog was in an above ground cage in the area, but does not appear to have been involved in the incident, according to the sheriff's office.

Veronica Copley, the owner of the dogs, helped search for the boy. She told WRAL that she has had the dogs for seven years and has a child of her own, but that there has never been any trouble with them. A beware of dog sign is posted on her property.

Neighbors said animal control has been called to the neighborhood before.

The boy's stepfather, who was on military duty in Iraq, was notified about the death and on his way home Tuesday night, Sherriff Larry Rollins said. The boy's father lives in Texas.

Rollins said Nathan had at least two bite marks. Investigators are trying to determine if the dog had rabies. The child and dog involved are being examined by the Medical Examiner's Office in Chapel Hill.

As deputies continue their investigation, they are trying to determine whether neglect charges should be filed against Gambill for leaving her son unsupervised.

North Carolina ranks seventh nationwide in fatal dog attacks with 17 cases documented between 1965 and 2001.

Across the country, 79 percent of all fatal dog attacks were on children under the age of 12; 21 percent of those attacks involved a pit bull, or a pit bull mix.

As far as I can see it -

a) where I live, 3 year olds wandering around unsupervised get HRS called. It could have easily have been a car as a dog. It sure wouldn't have taken me two hours to call 911. Heck most abducted kids are dead by then.

b)I don't blame a dog chained in it's own yard. But any owner of any large and potentially dangerous animal is stupid if they don't have access to that animal fairly well restricted. I have a German Shephard - have a 6 foot fence with a lock. And it only goes out when I am home, and keeping an eye and ear open. I don't need any bitten kids.

Anyone with a pit bull on a chain in their back yard for hours is begging for a lawsuit - and lets face it, 3 year olds, while slippery, wouldn't be able to get into a well protected yard.

In any case, the lawyers will smell blood with this one.

It can't be blamed on an animal who knows no more then the child. It is the owner's fault and the mother of the child for letting her three year old run around unattended a six year old can not be responsible for a three year old. My three year old and six month old have been raised with a pit bull, rotweiller and three other large dogs. Not one of the dogs has even growled at one of my kids. My pitt is pertective of my kids which makes me feel comfortable in my neighborhood.

Yeah but you can't blame a 3 year-old.

You CAN blame the stupid mother. This reminds me of the bimbo who let her kid wander into the neighbor's pool, then lobbied the city for a pool fence ordinance.

You don't leave 3 year olds unattended and unwatched for any significant period of time, unless they're asleep in bed.

Yes you can. If your dog is capable of killing someone, then it should be behind a fence. Where I live, you have to have a fence around a swimming pool because they pose a danger.
