State Department Criticism of Cartoons - a Hoax?

What in the world is going on with the story about the State Department condemning the Danish cartoons? LGF reader Ty points out that in three different news wire reports, the same statements are attributed to three different people.

Agence France Presse says the State Department spokesman was “Justin Higgins:” US blasts cartoons of Prophet Mohammed.

Reuters says it was “Kurtis Cooper:” US backs Muslims in cartoon dispute.

And the Associated Press says it was “Janelle Hironimus,” in a story by Qassim Abdel-Zahra: Protests Intensify Over Muhammad Drawings.

Is this story a hoax, or just hopelessly confused?

Deep Thoughts from Pakistan

Here’s a revealing comment in a story about the dread cartoons of blasphemy at the Washington Post, from an editor of a Pakistani newspaper: Tension Rises Over Cartoons of Muhammad.

But critics argued that publishers should be more discerning in the battles they choose over freedom of expression. “This is the sort of thing that will feed into al Qaeda, alienating and angering a lot of educated young people,” Najam Sethi, editor of Pakistan’s Daily Times and Friday Times, said in a telephone interview from Lahore.
Sethi and others see a double standard at work. “People who question some of the facts of the Holocaust are ostracized; most publishers are so sensitive they won’t even get into the argument,” Sethi said. “A degree of censorship is imposed that is not articulated in this case.”

It’s an interesting glimpse of a completely non-rational mindset, that can equate Holocaust denial with political cartoons. It isn’t surprising at all to see this kind of mental dysfunction combined with Jew-hatred. link: 230 comments

The circled entries are hits to my blog from Goodle image searches looking for the Muhammad cartoons.

This has been going on for days now. Sometimes it is a solid page of Google search hits. What used to be normally dead times, early morning hours from 2am to 6am Eastern, are now a constant buzz of search activity.

The protesters, people who want to make sure the Prophet is never mocked, satirized, or disrespected, have succeeded in making sure more people have looked at the image of the Prophet and laughed than if they had simply kept silent.

Now here's a thought. I wonder how many of those Google hits are from good Muslims surreptitiously taking a peek at the forbidden.

So much laughter to be punished.

So many people to behead.

And it's getting worse hour by hour.

The State Department Promotes Islamist Organizations

Not only does the U.S. government build mosques but it posts official pages on the Department of State website celebrating "Muslim Life in America" - something no other religion in the United States benefits from. In addition to the predictable feel-good writing and photography, the website also has a bibliography with select readings, Internet sites, and nongovernmental organizations. All of the sections hold interest, but the organizational one does most of all. A close look finds that the State Department provides links to and thereby endorses groups that the federal government has either effectively shut down (the American Muslim Council), is currently investigating (Islamic Society of North America), or has arrested multiple employees of (Council on American-Islamic Relations). Additionally, other organizations on the list (Council on Islamic Education, Islamic Institute, Muslim Public Affairs Council) were long ago exposed as sympathetic to militant Islam.

It's hard to win a war, you know, when one's foreign ministry publicly endorses the enemy's friends and agents. It's dispiriting and confusing. So, how about it, State Department, and take down the offending web pages? (February 25, 2004)

February 26, 2005 update: Quite the reverse: rather than take the offending names down, the State Department chooses to endorse Islamists in a new way. On a page listing "Selected Non-Governmental Organizations," the only two Muslim ones honored to be named are CAIR and MPAC.

Pretzel logic, clearly—and the dilemma that is at the root of an incoherent philosophical system that favors the sociology of group identity over the universality of individual rights. Again: note the crux of the debate, as framed by the voices for Muslim protest, and take care to listen for the broad-stroked rhetoric—usually more carefully crafted by those who have perfected its vocabulary, cadence, emotional appeals, and key words—of the “tolerance” movement, the justificating force that cynically underpins all identity politics:

"The 12 cartoons ... have caused an uproar in the Muslim world and drawn a new cultural battle over freedom of speech and respect of religions."

Translation: “Free speech is good so long as it tolerates our right, as an identity group, to dictate which free speech is authentic and allowable. Otherwise, y’know, we get to torch shit.”

You'll see some (though not all are guilty) of that pretzel logic on display here, including an admonishment to those republishing cartoons that we are "not being helpful". One suspects that, if sent back in time some 60ish years, such people would have been completely at home in "occupied" France.

The cartoon stuff is just window dressing. The Liberal Left press is COMPLETELY unreliable as news and thoroughly corrupt. This is all propaganda, planned a long time ago and set into motion according to timetable. One hopes Wretchard is correct that their timing is off, they stuck too soon and too confidently, not expecting their enemies to fight back, making the same mistake as all fascists dictators have made, that free citizens can't fight. They can fight, once they understand the stakes, and fight very very well. I am convinced the Paris Riots were planned.
