Howard Dean campaigns in Tallahassee

Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean told a Tallahassee audience today that southerners have to quit basing their votes on "race, guns, God and gays."

Dean, making his first campaign foray into North Florida, spoke at a rally in Jacksonville then addressed more than 500 people at a luncheon of the Capital Tiger Bay Club.

He said Sen. Bob Graham, who announced on Monday that he won't run for re-election, is on his "short list" for vice president - if he wins the Democratic nomination to face President Bush next November.

The former Vermont governor, who is a physician, also criticized Gov. Jeb Bush for rushing through a law that allowed Bush to override the courts and restore feeding to a Tampa woman, Terri Schiavo, who has been in a "persistent vegetative state" since 1990.

Dean said he hopes to reassemble a coalition of conservative southern voters like President Franklin Roosevelt had in the "solid South" 70 years ago. Although his opposition to the war in Iraq and his criticism of the Bush tax cuts do not score well in polls in the South, Dean said he hopes working families will support his call for improving education and health care.

In other words, Dean wants Southerners to accept gay marriage, racial preferences, the judicial assault on Judeo-Christian tradition, and the gradual erosion of Second Amendment rights.

All this despite the fact that the majority of Americans (and especially Southerners I assume) oppose racial preferences, gay marriage, ACLU attacks on public displays of faith, and the notion that Americans don't have an individual right to own guns.

He's basically trying to bribe people with the lure of federal money away from their strongly held social and cultural beliefs.

That's the way to win friends and influence people, by insulting them. What brilliant strategy!

Howard need to give us dumb southerners some pointers. If we're not supposed to use our value system to make decisions what do we use. I do drive a truck but I don't own a confederate flag. Should I vote based on who is cutest? Should I vote on dumbest? (Dean would win that one)

Well I'm one dumb white boy that's sick and tired of being sick and tired.

I’m sick of being sick and tired,
Yes something has to give.
It could not be my lifestyle,
You know the way I live.
So if I say, “I’m sick and tired”,
Please take it with a grain.
I’m really only sick and tired,
Of folks without a brain.
The democrats, the lib’ral press,
The folks in Hollywood.
They really want to wreck this land,
These folks aren’t up to good.
Don’t vote for dems, they mean you harm,
Don’t buy the New York Times.
Don’t go to see the movie show,
Please don’t support these slimes.
You see they need your money to,
Continue their crusade.
Let’s cut them off and then we’ll see,
The idiot’s parade.
They’ll whine and squeal that we aren’t fair,
That we have censored speech.
No, they can say what they will say,
But they aren’t out of reach.
The reach of Free America,
To say enough’s, enough.
They’ll find that down here on the ground,
Life can sure be tough.

LOL!! Dean is hilarious! What a patronizing shmuck. This kind of politicking probably plays well with his fellow white whine Vermonters, but I cant imagine southerners feeling too good about being lectured to by a priveliged millionaire leftist atheist WASP

Absolutely amusing...

Dean's going all manky too soon. He should wait until he has the nomination before he starts telling believers to take their God and shove Him.

"Stop burning crosses in the Negroes' yards," he added. "That's just not cool."

He cant possibly get the nomination, can he? This would be a dream come true for Bush. That arrogant SOB Dean will have alienated about 80 % of the country by the time he's done.

I have the best Republican Strategy for 2004.

Supply all the Democratic "challengers" with very good microphones.

I agree, and I don't think Dean has a chance in any Southern state except Florida, especially if he selects Graham to run with him.

My only concern is if he is close in the South. If so, the GOP would be wise to use this and other quotes by him to point out how condescending he is, and how he fully intends on shoving a far-left social agenda on them should he get elected.

I have my doubts because I think the GOP will be afraid of the inevitable, but bogus charges of being 'divisive.' They seem less and less eager to engage in the cultural war.

Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean told a Tallahassee audience today that southerners have to quit basing their votes on "race, guns, God and gays."

"Y'all need to stop marryin' your own sisters and whatnot, too," a cheerfully oblivious Dean continued. "Heckfire: just let us eerily brilliant Yankees come on down here and run the whole kit'n'kaboodle for all the rest of y'all, all right? After all... we ARE all naturally smarter than all of you, for pity's sake."

Oy. Such a putz. :)

Am I wrong, or has Howard Dean just stuck a fork in his own campaign? He's offended all of the white South, plus pretty much every black voter.

Maybe we should all register as (gulp!) Dems for the primaries so we could vote for him.
