Cranky SA not happy about his party's choice of OS

Is there any significance to what Web server/platform combinations 2004 presidential candidates are using?

As we swing into the thick of the 2004 electoral playoffs, it's interesting to see what kinds of platforms are running under the candidates' official campaign Web sites. Netcraft has a handy feature called "What's that site running?" that lets us see combinations of Web servers and OS platforms. So here's a quick rundown, in alphabetical order:

George W. Bush: Microsoft IIS on Windows 2000

Wesley Clark: Apache on Linux

Howard Dean: Apache on FreeBSD

John Edwards: Microsoft IIS "behind a computer running NetWare"

Richard Gephardt: Microsoft IIS on Windows 2000

John Kerry: Apache on Linux

Dennis Kucinich Apache on Linux

Carol Mosely-Braun: Apache on FreeBSD

Al Sharpton: Apache on Solaris 8

Joe Lieberman: Apache on FreeBSD For what it's worth, the Republican National Committee is running Microsoft IIS on Windows 2000, while the Democratic National Committee is running Apache on Linux.

As of this writing, November 5, 2003, the RNC has an uptime of 4.26 days (maximum of 39.04) and a 90-day moving average of 16.91. The DNC has an uptime of 445.02 days (also the maximum) and a 90-day moving average of 395.38 days.

Draw your own conclusions.

Sorry, I'm ignorant. What does this mean?

But let's be honest here. How much traffic do the routers of the all-mighty Kuchinut have to handle?

The Republicans are running Windows and have to reboot about once every two weeks. The Dems are running Linux and haven't rebooted for over a year.

Yeah, they may not have rebooted for a year, but it would be interesting to run a ps -ef (if I remember correctly) to see what stuff is running that shouldn't be. Most servers I've worked with have instructions that advise periodic reboots. I've run servers, both Linux and Windows, for a long time without a reboot, but had performance degrade due to processes hanging up, and not shutting down properly.

It means the 'Rats have chosen a more rubust server OS than the Publicans, and it stays up for more than an order of magnitude longer between reboots.

Or maybe the Publicans are paranoid, and constantly reboot their server even when it isn't really necessary.

The better the site platform, the worse the political platform.

A similar study was done in the early 80's. The Dems were using Beta VCR's, the GOP VHS.

We all know how that turned out...

The fact that the libs are running better server software indicates a couple of things:

A. They have attracted younger, volunteer information services types to run their servers.

B. They use free software because they believe they should never have to pay for services, somebody should give it to them for free.

This just validates an old axiom I love to quote to old hippies:

"If a man is not Liberal as a youth, he doesn't have a heart.
If a man is not Conservative as an adult, he doesn't have a brain."

My guess is that most of them outsourced the work and thus went with whatever their outsourcer picked.

So how did the Dems answer in the "Rock the Vote" debate to Mac vs. PC? Did any say Linux? :-)
