Being in the health care industry, I can tell you that family with limited financial (and insurance) resources are pressured into "code 1 status-do not resuscitate" status. The doctors almost focus exclusively on it.

However, if the patient has multiple insurance policies, or are family members of doctors, or prominent persons of the community and family member, they will pull out go the extra, extra, 100th mile to prolong, and possible save their lives.

This has disgusted me, and figured in my decision not to continue to work for this particular hospital, and I've told my family members to NEVER let Doctor so and so touch me with a ten foot pole. (the pull the plug happy, I used to call them)

Or, as in the case of my daughter, they may simply be unable to find any insurance company that will insure them. In our case, it is not a matter of not being able to afford it, it is a case of the insurance companies flat-out refusing coverage. Whenever she applies, she always receives a nice polite letter explaining that she is being "denied coverage" because of her pre-existing condition. She has to take expensive medicine and see expensive specialists, but she is classified as "uninsurable" so it is all out-of-pocket.
The day is coming when she will have to go on dialysis or seek a transplant, we will not be able to afford it and we don't know what we will do when that time comes.
Even that, as close to home as it hits, does not make me want to have a universal government run healthcare system.

Dollars to doughnuts the people who can't afford monthly health care premiums have the triple HBO satellite/cable channels and a damn boatload of credit card debt from going out to eat dinner 5 nights a week as well as surround sound home theatre, dvd's cd's, vacations etc.

How do you wish me to get specific?

This is an observation I have made through years of analyzing patients' records. I now code for a company where I code a variety of hospital records--and I do admit I don't see it like I did when I worked at previous employer.

You can take my opinion or leave it. Nobody is denied care, that is true. But I have seen very ill pts' families with insufficient insurance or no insurance at all practically arm twisted to accept the "code 1" status.

Insult me all you want. I'm just as conservative as anyone here. But it's the truth, and G-d knows it is. My religion comes before my politics anyway. I'm not going to be a Kool-aid drinker and pretend something that isn't. Some of you probably have no idea what my job is about. I'm not for government subsidized socialized medicine (Medicare and Medicaid are a nightmare, trust me), but there is A DIFFERENCE at this particular hospital in how you're treated depending on your insurance status.

I've seen this happen over and over again. It wouldn't surprise me if it happened at more hospitals than the one I used to work for.

My husband found out he was "uninsurable" because he snores. (no joke, that's what Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida said)

Can you find out if she can qualify for charity care? (we have a "we care" program here where I live--really helps) If she needs dialysis, she may qualify for Medicare. I know end stage renal disease patients qualify for this. May want to check it out.

I beleive being a dialysis patient will enable her to be Medicare eligible.
