The move by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) immediately paves the way for quicker confirmation of President Donald Trumps judicial and executive branch picks and comes amid deep GOP frustration with Democratic delays. Future presidents will benefit too, though McConnell and Trump stand to gain inordinately as they seek to fill 130 District Court vacancies over the next 18 months before the 2020 election.
The nuclear option a change of the Senate rules by a simple majority gained its name because it was seen as an explosive maneuver that would leave political fallout for some time to come. But its now been deployed three times in just six years amid continuous partisan warfare over nominations.
McConnell first sought to cut debate time on executive nominees, with the Senate voting 51-48 to overrule existing precedent. Later on Wednesday, McConnell will do the same for the District Court positions.
McConnell trashed Democrats systematic obstruction as he stumped for his effort on the Senate floor. His move is particularly consequential in divided government when much of the Senates time is now spent confirming executive nominees and lifetime judicial appointments. Under the change, debate time on District Court nominees and subcabinet executive nominees is slashed from 30 hours to 2 hours, a shift that will allow Republicans to fill dozens more vacancies over the coming months.

Yes!
Good.
About time!
“Future presidents will benefit too”
Because Democrats always heed traditions established by Republicans.
Give credit where its due.
Clap, just one, for Mitch.

Good!
Only 2 years late. McConnell sucks. RINOs suck.
Tried everything else before doing it.
No sympathy to democrats.

I watched C-SPAN2 and a couple of minutes ago the vote was completed to change the rule for District Court nominees also. It was like deja vu with the vote being 51-48.
Good. It is about time! president Trump has been President for 2+ years, repubs. Repubs should stop being weak sisters and being unsupportive of their President.
AFT
Is Mike Lee trying to steal the DRAMA QUEEN title from Cruz, or something?
This really sucks - the filibuster for nominees was NEVER INTENDED to be used like this and it should have been history the moment the Left started this crap. But NO!, our Drama Queens had to ‘resist’ on ‘principle’.
SICKENING.
Cruz is among the most closely aligned to Trump in the senate. for a republican, mike lee has been continually stabbing Trump in the back
like I said earlier
Its a good start, now remove all but 1 or 2 demonrats from every committee, Tip Oneill would approve!
I’d prefer to see all Presidential nominations go straight to a full senate vote. That day.
no committee has ever been good for anything.
Finally!..The backstabbing hemorrhoid no good turtle got one right!!
Now.
What will McConnell and his senate Majority do with All this extra Time gained?
I know McConnell Shirley wants to get right to work with our POTUS on drafting a mighty IMMIGRATION LAW, and supporting THE WALL, and acting immediately to SAVE HEALTH CARE.
Right?
Yes. While we have a majority.
And yes it is the right thing in principle. Why should a single Senator be given the full power of the whole Senate - to hold up a nomination by their own decision alone, with a “blue slip” or any other tradtion? They shouldn’t.
Yet in time we must pray we hold our majority, for without it we will regret this.
The good part for now is Trump is nominating a lot of younger judges, which will give us a longer time before they are replaced, which means we will have many election cycles before a lot of them retire.
