Trump Is Doing What He Said He’d Do
Five Thirty Eight ^ | January 29, 2017 | Nate Silver, founder and editor in chief

It’s up against some stiff competition, but there’s a runaway front-runner in the “wrongest idea of 2016” derby. It’s the aphorism, once fashionable on the morning-talk show circuit, that the media mistakenly took Donald Trump “literally but not seriously,” when they should have taken him “seriously but not literally,” as Trump’s supporters did.

If the idea is that the media should have taken Trump more seriously, then I’d emphatically agree. But it turns out that they probably ought to have taken him literally too. It’s been an exceptionally busy first 10 days in office for President Trump, culminating in an executive order on Friday that banned immigrants from seven predominantly Muslim countries from entering the United States for 90 days and banned all new refugees from entering the U.S. for 120 days. (Over the weekend, several courts issued rulings temporarily blocking parts of Trump’s order.)

Almost all of the actions that Trump has undertaken, however, are consistent with statements and policy positions he issued repeatedly on the campaign trail and during the presidential transition. It was more than a year ago that Trump called for a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States,” for instance. (Friday’s executive order stops short of that, but Trump allies such as Rudy Giuliani have spoken of the order as a legal workaround that seeks to accomplish the same objectives as a Muslim immigration ban.) Another executive order called for building a border wall with Mexico, which was perhaps the signature policy position of Trump’s campaign. And Trump might even try to “make Mexico pay for it” by imposing a tariff on Mexican imports....

I think Nate should have taken Trump more seriously. Didn’t he predict Hilary to win by some ridiculous percent right up to the end?

I can forgive Trump for getting right to work. Not being a seasoned politician, he doesn’t understand the concept of lying, deceit, and duplicitous behavior more experienced politicians have mastered.

Fox Business just said a poll is out showing 57% support the EO terror ban.

The leftists are pissing off normal Americans. They’re doubling down on what cost them the election.

Hope they keep it up!

And not is PRESIDENT Trump doing what he said he would do, he is doing it all at remarkable speed.

It is to make a snowflake’s head hurt. If only from the weeping.

How dare Donald Trump keep his campaign promises, unlike Barack “I’ll close Guantanamo” Obama.

Anyone who earns money off of models and has those models allow him to definitively state seven times “This time is really ‘Peak Trump,’” is a freaking idiot.

At some point, you have to say your models can't be used for any announcements, or you have to believe all the polls your models are fed by are so corrupted that outcomes cannot be had in this day and time.

Nate Silver is a friggin’ IDIOT!

With the exception of RCP, 538 was most generous to trump with about 30% win chance vs 1-10% for others. He was way off in primaries thoug.

A politician doing what he said he would do is so unfathomable the only explanation is that Trump is irrational and irresponsible ... a danger!

Nate Silver's final model gave Trump like a 27% chance.

Not to defend Silver too much, but The New York Times was giving Trump an 11% chance, ElectionBettingOdds a 9% chance, and the Huffington Post a 2% chance. Giving Trump better than one-in-four odds made Silver certainly more optimistic about his chances than all the other major mainstream odds sites.

I think Nate should have taken Trump more seriously.

I keep coming back to the journalist who said that you can take Trump either seriously or literally. I really thought this was insightful.

Trump is a salesman and an entertainer. Like Reagan, Trump is a great communicator. Sometimes he is brash. Sometimes he over-states. The news media insists on taking him LITERALLY which means that they often portray him as a bit of a clown.

BUT if you pay attention to what President Trump is really saying, he is hitting all of the important points, People listen. People get it. People want the things that President Trump is doing. The people take Trump SERIOUSLY.

Nothing will go right for the media until they start taking the President of the United States seriously. Everyone else does.

I’m very happy with what he’s done so far.
There is one thing he must do soon, though.
He promised to end Obama’s illegal DACA program.
Even if they don’t rescind papers already issued, they must stop issuing new ones.
Every day that passes another 150 illegal aliens are added to the 750,000 already given work permits.

Silver took flak from the left for consistently predicting a higher probability of a Trump win than the other sites. It bothered lefties because !) he predicted 2008 and 2012 with pretty good accuracy, and 2) he is a self-proclaimed progressive

I must say I'm impressed with the effectiveness of the media's brainwashing/psy-ops on their victims. Everyday and sometimes several times a day, the consumers of mass media have an emotional outburst to the latest Trump "outrage."

I'm waiting and hoping to watch them rundown like windup toys as their amygdalas burn out.

My insight of the morning: Mr. Trump lies to his enemies, but tells the truth to his criends. His enemies amplify his lies, while his friends are laughing at them and reveling in the truth.
