Trump’s new culture war has left liberals reeling. They thought they’d won that battle
The Manchester Guardian ^ | January 28, 2017 | Rich Lowry

The American coastal elites are living in a different country than they thought and it has a powerful voice in the new president

Donald Trump is an unlikely president. He is also an unlikely cultural warrior. That hasn’t stopped him from becoming both.

Besides throwing American politics into a tumult that won’t end in the near future, President Trump has reoriented and reinvigorated the American culture war. He has wrenched it away from its decades-long focus on issues related to religion and sexual morality and created another axis around populism and nationalism.

The issues involved in this new culture war – anti-elitism, political correctness, immigration, national sovereignty, multiculturalism – are every bit as charged as the ones that animated the old one. They involve the symbolically and emotionally fraught questions of how we should live and who we are as a people.

Other advanced countries don’t have culture wars quite like the United States. A fight has raged here since the 1970s over such issues as abortion, school prayer, traditional sexual mores, gay rights, religious displays on public property, pornography, graphic content in television shows and movies and school curriculums. The combatants have been, roughly speaking, secular coastal elites on the one hand and a religious heartland on the other....

Pretty good analysis - especially from the leftist Guardian.

I bet there isn’t a Freeper alive who didn’t want to throw a shoe at the TV when obama kept saying “that’s not who we are”!

That idiot didn’t even spend his childhood in America. I think he arrived when he was 19 then was under the corruption of communists in Hawaii, then uber liberals in college (so he says), then went even further left as a community organizer. At no time did he ever experience America either as a half white person or a half black person because he doesn’t have a single drop of African-American blood in him. His mostly Arab lineage as we can plainly see by his name and father and his mother’s white blood which he always resented.

So when someone like that or that rich jerk, zuckerberg, tries to lecture us on “who we are” I just want to slap ‘em silly for being so frickin’ pretentious. They have no idea what it’s like to be a regular American. Funny how Trump has been a billionaire all these years but never lost his down home American roots. We can see it in how well he raised his kids and his sometimes odd way of speaking. No pompous pretentiousness at all but at the same time confident and firm without being rude.

The left is now getting a taste of what it was like for us under an extreme radical leftist except Trump isn’t even that far right; he’s more center right but the left is now so far left he just seems to them to be really right wing. To me he’s simply acting and doing what a normal good Prez should do. Listening to obama as he paused between each word while also parsing his words when not reading a teleprompter was worse than getting a molar drilled on. I understand being careful to not say the wrong thing but that was ridiculous.

We are sick of the cultural marxist totalitarians! We need to take our freedoms back and reveal what progressives/democrats really are!

Our coastal elites aren’t secular. They have religions they want to impose on everyone, meaning the coastal elites are actually hoping to establish a theocracy of sacred cows.
To them, we’re heretics.

The left won battles, but the war is not over. With President Trump we now have someone elected because Americans reject PC. Finally, we can fight PC starting from the White House. Maybe Republicans and others will grow a pair watching President Trump trounce PC.

Long past due that the degenerate and Satanic left started losing.

So true. However, I'm just losing a dear old friend and ex over it.(40 plus years) I refuse to back down to this hysterical Marxist any longer. That part is not going well.

I'm becoming a hysterical Pro-Life, Constitutionalist Libertarian! :)

Well, you can either agree not to talk politics, or just walk away. Besides, if defending the indefensible means more to them than a 40+ year friendship, it’s their loss.

Someone like Trump was our only hope of ever turning decades of liberal indoctrination around. When the situation requires it, the right man will appear on the scene - Trump’s that man.

Well, it’s Rich Lowry, one of the National Review guys. He’s a conservative and almost always insightful.

The left fell into the old establishment trap declaring that "everyone agrees that...." and "the debate is over" and "scientists agree that..." and "all prominent people agree that..."

So folks in the Heartland grabbed the Saul Alinsky handbook and played by the Alinsky rules--there are no rules....there are only evil rulers....and the war for freedom is never over....

The one detail I would quibble with here is the assertion that Trump’s pro-life position is inauthentic. I think it’s authentic. He doesn’t worry much about gay rights and sexual morality in general because to him that’s consenting adults and whatever, but abortion offends his sense of justice because there’s a victim involved. Trump has a protector’s instinct so it bothers him. In fact, I would guess that it’s bothered him for a while but that he’s had to suppress it. Running as a Republican has actually given him a chance to “come out” on the issue. That’s my sense anyway.
