Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump got a poll boost from last week's convention, rising 5 points in RealClearPolitics.com's weighted poll average since it began, putting him almost a point above Democratic rival Hillary Clinton. This was despite a convention that by any standard was a raucous mess, suggesting that maybe controlled, tightly scripted conventions aren't the benefit they are assumed to be.
The Republican event in Cleveland including numerous stories of last-minute resistance by the "Never Trump" folks, pundit Laura Ingraham providing liberals with fodder to claim she ended her speech with a Hitler salute, the Trump campaign getting caught up in a plagiarism controversy for lifting from one of first lady Michelle Obama's convention speeches and an uproar over Sen. Ted Cruz's non-endorsement of the party's presidential candidate.
As with so many things involving Trump in this election cycle, the poll boost runs counter to what the conventional wisdom would suggest. Surely, such a disastrous spectacle should have dragged him down. How to explain this?
It may be that Trump benefited because of, not in spite of, the chaos. Most of the convention controversies were "inside the Beltway" stuff that regular voters don't bother with. For the proverbial "Joe Sixpack" it is probably bewildering that he is supposed to be outraged that a speech the candidate's wife didn't write herself took sections from a speech that the president's wife didn't write herself....

Good points.
How many people, while voting on Nov.8th, are going to be oh so outraged at alleged plaigerism by Melania’s speechwriter and vote for Hillary instead?? This is totally inside the beltway stuff that gives the talking heads something to talk about, but which most people just don’t care about.
The RNC’s biggest plague was the media and all their non-troversies, such as Malania’s speech which they droned on and on about through the entire convention.
I've also watched the DNC conventions up until 2008. I just couldn't bring myself to view that or any subsequent democrat lie fest.
If you just count the strikes in a baseball game and not the home runs, the winning team didn’t do so well.
The CNN poll of Trump came the very next day. In fact it may have been hours after. Anybody see whitesuite’s polls yet?
Most of these polls are rolling daily averages, aren’t they? So it will probably be at least next week before we know the effects of the Democrat Convention on the polls.
What a brilliant analogy. Well said, Raycpa!
The RNC reminded me of WWE Wrestlemania. You had your Heels (Shrillary, Hussein O), face-turned-heel (Ted Cruz), and, of course, the Faces (the Trump family, Sean Smith’s mom, the dudes who wrote 13Hours).
I wish these guys could get their story straight.
First, “Convention is poorly organized, it’s a disaster.”
Trump up.
Now it’s, “Convention may have helped Trump, but we can’t give him credit for it.”
What a bizarre view from some people. The convention had basically two non-scripted moments. The attempted coup on Monday during the day and the Cruz boos on Wednesday night. Otherwise it was a pretty solid production. The DNC has prayers booed, generals booed, hashtag banners unfurled about the candidates corruption, walkouts by large blocks of delegates, craziness outside by their own voters, Panetta booed and their own candidate getting a rough treatment. It was a veritable sh-t show by any standard. All glossed over in coverage by the way if it didn’t happen.
Not a peep still, which says to me they are sitting on news because it isnt good.
That is a very insightful statement. I may have to “borrow” it occsionally.
Thanks.
And dont forget that the Chairwoman was FORCED To resign on the eve of the convention and their #2 guy quit the party midweek. And the media says “Nothing to see here, move along”
I keep hearing this narrative from supposed conservatives that the GOP convention was a raucous mess when it just wasn’t. The DNC convention was.
Question anyone who says this. They need their teeth knocked out.
Turds in the punch bowl ...
Even inside the beltway people don’t care about most of it. It’s just manufactured outrages so the media doesn’t have to cover all of Hillary’s scandals, BLM shooting cops, or constant muslim terror attacks.
“Anybody see whitesuites polls yet?”
Polyester Pantsuit Patty’s numbers must have been terrible because they didn’t publish them.
I accept your nomination.
