US election: Credentials Committee could play hardball against Trump 'breaking rules'
The Ausgtralian Broadcasting Company ^ | April 23, 2016 | Michael Vincent

Imagine this: Republican presidential candidate runner Donald Trump wins 1,250 delegates, but far from waltzing into the nomination, he is undone.

Key points: •'Whoever chairs Credentials Committee better bring Tylenol', Donald Trump warns •It is made up of two national delegates from each state and territory, and District of Columbia •Political correspondent Tim Alberta says 'anything could pass'

It is entirely possible that some of those delegates get blocked from entering the convention even before it begins. It would mean he would not get the nomination outright.

To get into the convention you need credentials.

"There is going to be probably the nastiest fight on the Credentials Committee that we've seen in the modern history of the Republican party," said chief political correspondent for National Review, Tim Alberta.

It is one of the most influential conservative journals in the United States and ran an entire issue against Mr Trump.

"Whoever chairs that committee better bring some Tylenol," he said.

"Because they are going to have a very, very long couple of days deciding who in fact is allowed to be seated, who is not allowed to be seated, they're going to be refereeing some extremely ugly personal disputes."

Many thought it would be the Rules Committee that would be the focus of the campaign's and media's attention.

"The Credentials Committee has always operated with a little bit of anonymity over the years," Mr Alberta said.

"That's not going to be the case this summer you're going to see a nasty public brawl at that committee especially if Trump is close to 1,237, but not quite there.

"You know the Cruz folks and the Kasich folks are going to be pulling every rabbit out of their hat imaginable to try to one by one sway that 112 member committee to eliminate pro-Trump delegates for any reason under the sun.

"There could be ethical, legal, criminal issues raised — it's going to get very, very nasty."

'It becomes a kangaroo court'

That committee is made up of two national delegates from each US state and territory, as well as the District of Columbia.

Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus will choose who will chair that committee.

Let us just say Mr Priebus and Mr Trump have kept Twitter busy with their spats.

"He should be ashamed of himself because he knows what's going on," Mr Trump said of Mr Priebus recently, continuing his claims the byzantine party rules for selecting delegates to send to the national convention have been unfairly exploited by his rival, Senator Ted Cruz.

Mr Priebus responded to Trump's claims on Twitter: "Nomination process known for a year + beyond. It's the responsibility of the campaigns to understand it. Complaints now? Give us all a break."

South Carolina is the perfect example of when the Credentials Committee could play hardball.

"So Trump in SC won all 53 delegates, but when he filed for the ballot in that state he pledged to support the eventual nominee. However, in an interview in CNN [he] reneged and said that he no longer feels that way," Mr Alberta said.

"There's going to be some kind of hearing on that in the Credentials Committee where Cruz or Kasich['s] people are going to stand up and say 'look, he broke the rules, and the 50 delegates awarded to him should be unbound to vote for whomever they like because he broke party rules'.

"That seems flimsy to me and I can't see how that's a plausible case to take away 50 delegates from a guy who dominated that state and won by double-digits there, but at that point it becomes a kangaroo court.

"Nobody has any idea how the process would work — anything could pass. That has to be a very scary thought for the Trump people."

While technically plausible, none of these parlor tricks will play well. The GOP will make their peace with Trump and then he will be nominated.

I’ve been saying for a while that it doesn’t matter how many delegates King Trumpy goes to the convention with.... they ain’t gonna give him the Republican nomination. He has thrown to much dynamite around.

Hard ball?

Leaves these two out. Both Cruz and Kasich have been flipping and flopping if they would support the Republican nominee.

Are you posting this as news or with thinly veiled glee that your little buddy Ted is up to more of his tricks?

People are learning what the hell is going on....and why Trump considered 3rd party.

Actually, he has succeeded in forming a 3rd party within the umbrella of the Republican party.

If the party burns him, there'll be hell to pay.

I believe the real fight is over who is in control of the convention: speakers, agenda, platform, etc. It is the presumptive nominee who does this as the kick-off for the campaign. But the RNC does not want to give this over to Trump. This is where the fight will be.

You were just on Jim Robinson’s thread and yet here you are again posting anti-Trump crap and even had to hunt as far as you did to find something...

Did you NOT understand what Jim was saying? Or is it you just don’t care?

I’m not a delegate. I’m not a repub power broker. I have no say. Just an opinion. I’ve been watching politics a long time. Do you really think the repub power brokers are going to give King Trumpy the nomination? Seriously?

You should grow out of the name calling, and go back to the oil patch until you can act as an adult. I don’t care how many rigs you own, as long as you act like a crass child.

Jim set the rules today. Yeah, of course dissent is great, but the presumptive nominee is Trump - not Cruz. It’s time to start working against Hillary.

So King Trumpy calls everybody a name.... but that's not childish? Is that what you're saying? When he does it it's not childish.... but anyone else doing it makes it childish? Really?

There is a difference between being the presumptive nominee and getting the nomination. I agree.... Cruz and Kasich cannot get to 1,237 before the convention. I'm just saying that I've been watching politics a long time.... and I'd bet you $100 that the party does not give King Trumpy the nomination. Will it hurt the party? Sure... Will it make the trumpsters unhappy and make them walk?? Yep.. a lot of them. It is what Rush has been saying for a while now..... the power brokers are not going to lose their grip... that's just my opinion.
