Maybe Iâm overselling it a tiny bit in the headline. Watch the clip below, from 3:05 to 5:00, and tell me what heâs saying. When heâs asked who heâd vote for in a Trump/Hillary election, he emphasizes that heâs a Republican but he wonât give a straight answer about supporting Trump. He wants to see if Trump, as nominee, blossoms into a âproblem-solverâ during the general election campaign, in which case then, it seems, heâll support him. But what if Trump doesnât become that guy? Huntsman says no when asked about an independent run but then adds, âIâm not ready for a third-party run until we have a complete collapse of the Republican Party that I can still believe in.â Er, isnât that exactly how Trumpâs critics on the right describe the prospect of him as nominee? If he goes on being his Trumpy self rather than the imaginary Serious Trump that Huntsman suggests he might become, would Huntsman get in then? Heâs right that a third-party run would be a âsuicide mission,â but some segment of the GOP base would be up for that rather than see Trump win. Whoâs going to be their figurehead?
Jeff Greenfield imagined exactly this sort of scenario, in which Trump wins the nomination and then the Republican establishment goes third-party against him, this weekend:
Dan Schnur spent a lifetime in the vineyards of the Republican Party, working in the Reagan and Bush presidential campaigns and serving as communications director for the California Republican Party. Heâs now an independent and heads the Unruh Institute of Politics at USC. He argues âa Trump nomination would virtually guarantee a third-party campaign from a more traditional Republican candidate.â(continued)

Let’s get REAL Democrativ insider sentiment on this. If the start defecating bricks maybe some people can work to make this run a reality.
Who? Run for what?
This is the standard Establishment tactic when they don’t get their way. From Ollie North to Joe Miller, this is the Establishment’s way of doing things to stop conservatives.
My greatest fear is that Lindsey Graham will run 3rd party! /sarc
We hve the Republican nominee, whoever that is; Hillary; Sanders; Webb; and Huntsman. Now, that could be genuinely interesting.
I guess the GOPee isn’t satisfied with the party ending with a whimper. They want to see a bang.
His family and some leftists in downtown Salt Lake City will vote for him.
Why does anyone need a nasty waiter from a French Restaurant!
Let’s pick the GOPe loser nominee when they run one 3rd party....
Lindsey 0%
Bush 3%
Kasich 3%
Jindal? I’ll give the guy credit and say he wouldn’t do it.
Walker? Yeah, I think he’d rather have a cabinet seat.
Perry? 0%
It’s funny, do they think anyone is going to pack the voting booth for Mittens?
I mean this is f’ing hysterical. None of “their” candidates can break 5% in a primary and they’re talking 3rd party. In the general election cut that 3% by 2/3rds and you’re talking... oh a 1% candidate.
Hey Lindsey! We found you a way to generate 1% voter support!
The GOPe has a slight hold on Rubio, but for the most part they have and will be unsuccessful forcing a candidate down our throats.
So, who are the fools who are going to cough up the money for Huntsman to mount any sort of campaign?
By the way, who is Huntsman? The only time his name comes up is during some sort of scramble for candidates.
If the GOPe would just quit kicking the will of the people, they just might get a huge surprise and untold landslides. The 2010 and 2014 elections prefigure what we the base really want to do for our country.
But alas, their minds are not bent towards the people.
When Jeb said he could win without support of the base - he pissed me off bigtime.
We got the top three and I am sure the GOPharisees are apoplectic and verklempt.
Former Republican Governor from Utah I think. Had a short-lived presidential campaign in the R party for 2012 but I think he's just a fracking Democrat/liberal who was in it to upset stuff and take votes. I know there was talk about his being a Democrat Stalking Horse in the Republican Camp.
It all depends... on whether Hillary’s campaign warchest will be large enough to fund TWO campaigns for president. I suspect it is. But John Huntsman? He’s about 2 notches lower than Linda Graham.
Jon Huntsman?! Where’s the cry for Jon Huntsman?!
Jon Huntsman?! Where’s the cry for Jon Huntsman?!
Another Ego problem.
He is completely controlled by the rinos. He thought that was his ticket to the top as soon as he got into the Senate.
Oh please no
