The collapse of Rand Paul and the libertarian moment that never was
Fox News ^ | October 2, 2015 | Jerry Taylor

The libertarian moment in American politics—foretold just last year in the New York Times magazine—is like the horizon; always retreating as we advance upon it.

The political events of 2015 are a brutal reminder about how far this country is from embracing libertarianism and how alien those ideas are even to the purported shock troops of the freedom movement. While libertarianism’s opponents can take heart, its champions are setting their cause back by pretending that all is well.

The collapse of the Rand Paul campaign speaks volumes. In a 15-person field, Paul is the only candidate who looks even remotely libertarian (social tolerance, foreign policy restraint, and limited government). He started the campaign with decent name recognition, a seat in the United States Senate, lavish media attention, a serious will to win, and a battle-tested, national political operation inherited from his father, Ron.

If there were any significant support for Libertarian ideas in the GOP—any at all—Rand Paul would be near the top of an otherwise crowded, fragmented field that is fighting over every non-libertarian voter in the party.

Yet he’s polling at a mere 1 percent among Republican voters nationwide and has a higher unfavorability rating than anyone else in the GOP race....

Good one, I guess we can now “bring out the Paul bearers.”

The Libertarian Party has been around since at least 1972, and it has never received even two million votes for their Presidential candidates. Socialist and leftist parties have done better in the early and mid 1900s, such as with La Follette in 1924 and Henry Wallace in 1948. However, these parties helped to move the Democrats leftward, as evidenced by Franklin Roosevelt in 1932 and Adlai Stevenson in 1952. Likewise, George Wallace's American Party Presidential run in 1968 motivated the Republicans to become the “law and order” party. Rebranding the GOP as such and categorizing the Democrats led in 1972 by McGovern as the party of “acid (LSD), amnesty, and abortion” enabled Richard Nixon to have a 49 state landslide. The libertarians, either small-l like Ron Paul or capital-L like the Libertarian Party, have not had a similar impact.

The Libertarian Party HAS had an impact. It has enabled a number of progressive ‘RATS to be elected over constitutional conservative Republicans.

Be careful in discounting the libertarian movement. They are adept in nominating doofuses, splintering the GOP vote and aiding liberals and democrats.

Oh. And they roll a tight joint, too. FWIW.

Rand Paul looked good at a distance.
But the more he opened his mouth, the less he resembled his Dad, who was excellent.
Rand Paul called Trump juvenile names.
Rand Paul showed himself to be a supporter of McConnell, aka McSurrender, who has to be the worst Senate Leader in our lifetimes (unless one is a Dem, in which case McConnell is the best leader).
So what is left to like?
To me at least, Rand Paul showed himself to be just another wannabe GOPe RINO.
And lost my trust and confidence.

The secret of Trump’s appeal to Paul’s base is that a large segment of the “Ron Paul Revolution” leavened its libertarianism with a pony keg of crazy. Birthers, 9/11 Truthers, a wide assortment of conspiracy theorists (many of whom believe the Federal Reserve to be a modern manifestation of the Illuminati), and naked racists rivaled the number of reasonably sober libertarian-ish voters among the faithful.

Way to go, Jerry! This is the shallowist, least well-thought-out piece of crap I've read in a long time. I think we ought to take this quote and place it in Webster's dictionary under non-sequitur.

Just shows that neither party is interested in either the Constitution or individual freedom. and that the socialist school system has made sure that voters aren’t either.

Cruz is fairly libertarian, probably more so than he lets on at this time, but I think he just settles now for being a Constitutionalist.

It didn’t help that he came out for FELON VOTING RIGHTS and virtually against Voter ID.

If we want that, we’ll just go with Hillary.
