About the only thing Ted Cruz and Bernie Sanders have in common is that they're both senators and they can both draw sustained, massive crowds when it really counts. But their turns in the spotlight this summer, amid news cycles dominated by the Donald Trump parade, have shown that these political outsiders, be they real or perceived, have broken through -- together.
As an unlikely duo, Sanders and Cruz have constituted the most-watched threats to the prospect of their parties' mainline candidates winning the nominations. For Sanders, of course, there are lingering questions about how his campaign will transform turnout at rallies into voter turnout in dozens of crucial primaries. Cruz has floated, though carefully, the idea of a brokered GOP convention where he can round up enough support from snubbed conservatives to launch a successful challenge, if the party looks to be crowning Jeb Bush or maybe Marco Rubio.
Both senators have to deal with those questions as they arise, but as a tag-team force at this very early stage, Cruz and Sanders are seemingly each other's best friends....
