After a tepid start, Ted Cruz plans to ‘play hard’ in Iowa (Joni Ernst's father supporting Cruz)

RED OAK, Iowa — Sen. Ted Cruz wound his way through the small towns and rolling hills of western Iowa last week, doing the gruntwork of retail campaigning: shaking hands, posing for photos, giving stump speechesand, most importantly: making entreaties for support in a state that could determine the trajectory of his presidential campaign.

“Whether we win or lose, this race will be decided by the men and women gathered here,” he said last Friday to a group of mostly older people sitting on folding chairs in a conference room.

Iowa’s first-in-the nation caucuses are often a high-stakes event for presidential campaigns — and this year the state is especially critical for Cruz, a stalwart conservative in a crowded field. The Texas Republican’s uncompromising stances seem designed to appeal to the conservative base that dominates the state GOP, as well as the state’s heavy concentration of evangelical Christians....

The supreme court decisions yesterday and today should help focus conservatives.

“The supreme court decisions yesterday and today should help focus conservatives.”

The November showed that conservatives are focused. It is the ones who betrayed us that are not focused.

I don't get it, it's still very early Cruz will make the play he needs and will compete in Iowa.

He just wants to hit every county. Remember, he is in other states too laying the groundwork. Cruz, with the recent decisions, will do just fine.

I have trust in Cruz, this early polls, primaries and cacusses don’t mean much. After the debates is when most people pay attention.

Erod,

I have been trying to tell this to the trolls...you are underestimating Cruz and his support and you are putting too much emphasis on polling. Remember, if these polls were right, Romney would be President.

Cruz has won ALL of the grassroots polls taken of Conservative activists. He is the only one being asked to speak at GOP dinners. He has teams on the ground in multiple states and has raised a TON of money. He has a strong team in IA and SC and FLA.

Think about it...if he weren’t winning or close too it, WHY would the trolls care if he “betrayed” us with certain votes. Why still comment or draw pics with a gun to his head if he was irrelevant?

At this time in ‘07, it was Hillary V. Rudy G., with NOBODY else going to win anything.
These early polls are meaningless !

They are also used to determine or undermine enthusiasm for a candidate. Remember, these polls also have Hillary winning...

Good points, please know that by nature I am a skeptic and a pessimist. I think Cruz is going to do great and is undervalued. My only fear TNmouth is that he may fall out of the Fox News poll. As long as he’s in that first debate he’s going to do well.

Cruz better change his strategy. His poll numbers look pathetic. Whatever he is doing, is not connecting with voters.

Who was leading at this point in 2007 and 2011?

If election was held on the day poll was done, Hillary wins easily. Polls are a snapshot at the time of poll. 47% of voters will pull the lever for Hillary regardless of what she has done wrong. They do not care if she deleted emails. The GOP candidate has to convince the other 53%. Looking at Cruz’s poll numbers, he can’t even attract republican voters. His poll numbers are dismal among republicans!

I have been in with Cruz since he ran against Dewhurst.

Dewhurst got in the mud the first day and Cruz rode above it.

If Cruz bows to one of the many Iowa Ethanol Lobbyist, I am done. It matters that much to me.

Cruz doesn’t have to win but he really needs a second or third in order to start weeding out the wanabees.

... The billionaire real estate mogul has taken a rather shocking nine-point lead in a national poll of the hypothetical Republican presidential field, according to a new survey by Public Policy Polling.

Trump leads with 26 percent, followed by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (17 percent), former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (15 percent) and ex-Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich (11 percent)...

I wouldn’t worry about it. Fox knows that Cruz is too strong a debater for that. He is fine. Besides, when fundraising numbers come out, that will tell a lot
