Cruz defends trade support against conservative criticism

Sen. Ted Cruz is usually in lockstep with the conservative base.

But as the far right worries about the content of a pending trade deal and the power that related legislation could give the president, Cruz has not been in lockstep.

And he’s been using conservative talk radio to defend his support for two critical parts of President Barack Obama’s trade agenda: Trade Promotion Authority (TPA), and the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). TPA, also known as “fast track,” means Congress can only approve or reject a trade deal without amending it. TPP is a pending trade deal with up to a dozen nations that the White House says can’t be completed without fast track authority.

Cruz said he supports fast track– which presidents of both parties have used for decades–and free trade in principle, though he’s reserving judgment on TPP until the deal is completed and he can study the details.

Other staunch conservatives aren’t quite on board. Some are hesitant to give a president they view as tyrannical any more power, and say that TPP, whose details remain secret to the public, has provisions that could affect American immigration enforcement and sovereignty.

“Ted Cruz and his vote to help pass Obamatrade has everyone puzzled and confused,” wrote Eric Odom for LIbertyNews, a conservative blog. “Can he really be trusted to be in charge of the Executive Branch?”

The Senate passed fast track two weeks ago, but the legislation has been jammed up in the House, where trade-skeptical Democrats today killed a chance to pass it even after Obama tried to rally their support at the Capitol hours before the vote.

Cruz has a similar challenge: Convince the people who have consistently supported him to trust him on something they fear....

I think the issue is all the secrecy and potential loss of sovereignty, because no one in their right mind is against trade, just poorly negotiated agreements getting shoved through.

Cruz had better not let this become his Achilles’ heel. Support of anything Obama seeks as a goal is trouble.

My question for Senator Cruz: Isn’t the whole point of Trade Promotion Authority TPA to make it extremely difficult to prevent agreements like the Trans-Pacific Partnership TPP from becoming law?

It is puzzling. Cruz needs to be able to ‘study the details’ when he can actually do something to effect the final outcome.

They weren’t “fund-raisers” but concerned citizens meeting with him about Israel.

Ted Cruz is wrong. The U.S. Doesn’t need any more H1B foreign workers when tens of thousands of our citizens could do those jobs and are not given a chance by American IT companies. You’d think he would be smarter than to promote such an unjust policy.

TPA may have been OK back when we had a president we trusted to have our best interests at heart. We can't trust this president and, I suppose, we will never be able to trust our president again, no matter what party he's from.

Ted Cruz might think he's doing the right thing, but I believe he should listen to his constituents and supporters and vote no on both TPA and TPP.

Umm, did you ever think that his constituents (Texans) might be in favor of this?

It may be that Ted is thinking ahead to when he is President.
As long as the current one is there no one trusts.

I suspect that those Texas’ supporters for Cruz plan on sharing in the looting of America through the Transnational Progressivist Agenda in ObamaTrade.

In order to turn this country around (not just manage the decline), we have to hit on all full cylinders in every aspect of economy, including trading with other countries. We will need a highly-skilled workforce to expedite our recovery. As we know, the free public education of this country is horrible. What does it produce? Fewer and fewer qualified students for colleges to become highly-skilled graduates (science, technology, engineering and math).

Are you preparing for the ever-worsening skills gap?

It will take a generation or so to produce highly-skilled graduates of our own to participate in our economic recovery. Meanwhile, we have to borrow some of those from other countries.

so who is everyone going to vote for if not Cruz. dont underestimate jeb and the establishment backing him. we need to all get behind one conservative early and strongly or we will lose this to jeb.
please think twice before abandoning Cruz. so we found out he’s not perfect maybe. who is?
we have the IRS, EPA, ISIS in 50 states, 19 trillion debt and on and on.
i hope he wins. and he is polling close to pantsuit, who is eminently beatable.
please just ask yourself, would Cruz concede US sovereignty.
never.
