Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) took his presidential campaign to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce this week, where he raised a provocative point about, of all things, panhandling. Benjy Sarlin reported:
If you look at the values that resonate in our community, they are faith, family, patriotism, hard work, he told host Javier Palomarez, the CEO of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
Some years ago I was having lunch with a Hispanic entrepreneur in Austin and he asked me a question: He said, When was the last time you saw a Hispanic panhandler? Its a great question . Im not sure Ive ever seen a Hispanic panhandler and the reason is in our community it would be shameful to be begging on the street.
It wasnt a slip of the tongue the far-right senator made similar remarks on Fox News a few years ago.
Cruzs comments stood out for a few reasons, some of which are arguably more obvious than others. Note, for example, that the senator referenced our community, connecting him directly to Hispanics in general. Though Cruz rarely refers to himself as Hispanic, at this event, the Republican frequently used works like us and we when talking to this audience....

He’s not getting the AA vote anyways.
I predict he’ll get more of it than McCain and Romney did.
Oooooh. He’s a “far right” Senator.
“When was the last time you saw a Hispanic panhandler?”
In Mexico. They are all over. Old ladies, old men and
little kids. Most Mexicans don’t like them and run them off.
There are also, here in the states, those Mexican bizarre
and flea markets where the Mexican bums hang out.
There’s mexican bums, every wetback in this country is a
bum in one way or another. This tact may work on the idiots
in the rest of the country but not here in Texas.
I guess he hasn’t been on the streets of Houston much then. I see Hispanic panhandlers almost every day. I’ve even seen a couple women wearing abayas in the medium panhandling.
But most Hispanics I know are willing to work hard to advance themselves. As such, there is a real possibility down in the Los Angeles area, the Hispanic dominated areas like East Los Angeles and Santa Fe Springs are going to start rapidly gentrifying, while the black-dominated areas like South Central, Compton and Watts lag way behind.
TRUTH: It's the new HATE SPEECH!
Why do they have to beg when they all get welfare and other benefits? Heck they don’t need to beg when you get everything handed to you.
Most definitely! He’s an inspiring man! He excites people, young and old! Maybe even some of your “smarter” RATS will hear something they agree with in him. who knows, maybe a few of them want to feel patriotic about and love for their country again...
” I live in the heart of Illegal Land, Santa Ana, CA, and have as yet to see a Hispanic panhandler. “
Great! You must have equity. Sell your house, and move....NOW!
I’ve seen plenty in Amarillo.
