Mitt Romney warms to Marco Rubio as young senator cultivates relationship
The Washington Post ^ | March 13, 2015 | Robert Costa and Philip Rucker

Sen. Marco Rubio has been cultivating a relationship with Mitt Romney and his intimates, landing some of the 2012 Republican nominee’s top advisers and donors and persistently courting others as he readies an expected 2016 presidential campaign.

In a crowded field of contenders, the imprimatur of Romney could help clear Rubio’s path into the top tier. Since Romney announced in January that he would not run for the White House again, he and Rubio have had at least two lengthy phone calls in which Romney encouraged and mentored the 43-year-old Florida senator about the political landscape, according to a Romney associate.

Rubio and Romney have built a warm and trusting rapport, in contrast to the frostiness that exists between Romney and the two current GOP front-runners, former Florida governor Jeb Bush and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker....

He said:

"Marco, you do not yet realize your importance. You have only begun to discover your power. Join me, and I will complete your training. With our combined strength, we can end this destructive conflict and bring order to the country."

Which, all by itself, tells you what a GOP-Establishment tool Marco is.

All the gas on FreeRepublic about how Marco was fooled by McCain et. All on his Amnesty proposal was just that, a bunch of hot air.

They should fly off together and honeymoon in Pyongyang. Just don’t ever come back.

In my own words, so as to NOT break the excerpt rules.

Marco Rubio was born into the Catholic Church, but while he lived in Las Vegas for several years, he was also baptized in the Mormon Church.

He and his family returned to Florida when he was a teenager and rejoined the Catholic Church.

Several of Rubio’s cousins remain affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Easy to see aa added, special reason for Romney's interest in Rubio's candidacy.

Immigration is my number one issue.

I supported Romney in 2012 because I actually believed his GOP Primary promises to vigorously enforce our immigration laws.

Instead, he walked away from those promises 2 years later, and embraced Amnesty, and is now quietly supporting Rubio.

The GOP leaders for 2016 are Rubio, Jeb Bush, Rand Paul, and Scott Walker.

The first three proudly support Amnesty and massive legal immigration.

Walker quietly supports Amnesty and massive legal immigration.

I will never vote for them.

I actually can’t recall whom you support.

Ted Cruz?

I might vote for Cruz.

But Cruz is unelectable nationally, and his track record on immigration promises (good) versus his track record on serious, courageous immigration action (poor) does not inspire me.

Maybe I’m stupid this late at night, but I couldn’t grok what you meant. “Unelectable?” Like Ronald Reagan circa 1979? And what did he do vis a vis immigration that makes you think he failed somehow?

That totally explains why once Rubio won the republican nomination for senate, he plastered a big picture of Mitt Romney on his webpage. I always thought it was the biggest slap in the face to the TEA party organizations in Florida. When he started lying and etch-a-sketching like Mitt, I figured Marco had just morphed into his hero. Now I understand why.

No Mitt. No Marco. Not for any public office. Neither one of them can ever be trusted.

I don’t recall THAT, but you would know, given that you’re a Floridian.
Thanks for telling me.

Re: “Unelectable?” Like Ronald Reagan circa 1979?”

Would that be the same Ronald Reagan who signed the Reagan Amnesty in 1986?

Would that be the same Ronald Reagan who could not be elected governor of California in 2016 because of the immigration floodgate he opened 30 years ago?

The USA electorate has totally changed. In 1980, 88% of voters were white. In 2012, when Socialist Barack Obama won reelection, just 72% of voters were white.

When Reagan won his landslide reelection in 1984, 91% of Blacks voted against him, and 66% of Hispanics voted against him.

If Reagan had posted those same numbers in 2012, running against Barack Obama, Reagan would have just barely beaten Obama in the popular vote.

Since the Reagan Amnesty in 1986, massive LEGAL immigration has totally changed the culture of America, and it has totally changed the political power in America.

If you can't see that, if you can't understand that, then I don't know what else to say.

Re: “And what did he [Ted Cruz] do vis a vis immigration that makes you think he failed somehow?”

2000 - Ted Cruz helped write GOP presidential candidate George W. Bush's immigration policy statement.

2005 - That policy statement became the blueprint for the Bush-McCain Amnesty of 2005-2006 that nearly fractured the Republican Party.

2012 - Ted Cruz publicly campaigned for more foreign work visas for Texas ranchers and farmers.

2014 - Ted Cruz, speaking in El Paso, stated he would have supported the Gang of Eight Amnesty if border security was “certified” and if there was no “path to citizenship.” What bunk! Every RINO Amnesty pimp in the Republican Party says exactly the same thing.

2014 - Cruz indicated he would support more “high tech” foreign work visas. More bunk! Those visas do nothing but push down salaries for American born workers and allow American corporations to replace American born workers over age 40 with cheaper and younger foreign born workers.

2015 - What could Cruz do that would convince me he's serious about immigration? He could go back to El Paso and tell the 80% Hispanic audience he will introduce legislation that will stop Birthright Citizenship, that will stop Family Chain Migration, and that will dramatically reduce the number of new legal immigrants and new citizens. Cruz will never do that, because he knows he might lose his 2018 Senate reelection if he did.

Rubio has been the Establishment’s backup plan. But we have two top tier candidates of our own, Walker and Cruz.

the rat’s little hidden partner since JETBlue.

NO more Soros candidates like Romney and Obola.

I wouldn’t claim Cruz to be unelectable this early - he’s my main hope but Walker would be fine with me if Cruz doesn’t make the slate. If Cruz crashes and burns, Walker seems like the best substitute even though many are already trying to trash him for their personal “sensibility litmus items”. I can see dumping on Jeb/Chris and leaving the rest alone for now to try to affect the primaries in a positive way.

I think I know what Romney is up to.

Mitt hates Jeb Bush and Mitt is using Rubio as a weapon against Bush. Mitt thinks if Rubio can win Florida, Bush will go down in flames.

In Mitt’s mind, Rubio is Jeb’s enemy and the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

On another note, how bad does Mitt want to get in this race now that Hillary is going down in flames? He must be kicking himself for getting out of the race last month.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he decided to get back in again. The laughter of the politco people would be unbearable.

Mitt is angling to be a Vice-President. Rubio probably has been the only candidate willing to entertain the idea.

Rubio/Romney in 2016 - yeah that’s the ticket. /sarc
