Cornyn says GOP field is set, sans Palin
The Houston Chronicle's Perry Presidential Blog ^ | August 30, 2011 | Joe Holley, Political Editor

Mitt Romney needs Sarah Palin to jump into the race, Chris Cillizza of The Washington Post observed today.

Not gonna happen, said John Cornyn, who was in Houston this week to talk about an EPA ruling that he contends will cause utility bills to go up. “I’d be kind of surprised if the presidential field expands any more,” the senator said after a press conference at the Ripley House on the East Side. “I think it’s pretty much set.”

If Romney’s going to be the GOP nominee, Cillizza writes, he needs to fracture Rick Perry’s tea party coalition, even as he gets the non-tea party element of the party more enthusiastically behind his candidacy. “Palin can, theoretically, help him do both.”

At the moment, though, Perry is leading Romney by 12 points in two national polls.....

With the exception of the Bush loyalists, establishment Republicans have no problem with Rick Perry either. Criticism of Perry comes from conservatives and a few Bush loyalists, like Karl Rove, who would be left out in the cold.

Cornyn needs a primary challenger BAD. And not only because of the reasons in the OP; he has been limp in the Graham mold on several important issues.

I wish my rep (John Carter) would take him on, but it probably won’t happen.

Cornyn has always been a Bush Republican...remember when he started in the senate? He won the election Senate Phil Gramm had retired...and W moved Gramm out after Thanksgiving and brought in Cornyn. Gramm didn’t even finish that term. I thought that was a bit strange...

It's not really that strange. By appointing Cornyn early, he gained a seniority advantage over other senators elected that November.

By the way, I am not a fan of either George Bush or John Cornyn.

First things first. I am hoping that Hutchison gets replaced by a solid conservative this go around.

Ted Poe should run against Cornyn.

I think that's the first time I've seen someone call Palin Romney's stalking horse.

In a better world, Hutchinson would have resigned from the Senate when she decided to run for Governor, Perry could have appointed Michael Williams to fill out her term and Texas would have had at least one decent Senator. But KBH is too much of a RINO to do anything like that so we end up with no Senatorial representation.

She supported Perry for Texas- good call.

She’s not stalking for Romney, or blocking for Perry.

She’s stalking Obama, for the sake of this Republic.

Perry is the GOP version of Obama.

Over-hyped, Under-vetted, the object of blind worship, pushing government health solutions on the citizens, seeking to take over transportation, a large government slush fund for promoting preferred businesses, willing to sell sensitive industries to China, with questionable ties to Muslims, promoting pro-choice candidates in 2008, and with dubious allegiances to other countries.

There are only two things Perry has going for him:

Cheers!
