Andrew Sullivan: The Unstoppable Sarah Palin
The Atlantic ^ | July 9, 2010 | Andrew Sullivan

(VIDEO AT LINK)

Chris Matthews sees Palin inflicting an "early knockout" in the primaries. Larison, still betting against her, argues that the GOP establishment will quash her candidacy:

Palin and Mondale are alike in that they represent the face of the party as it was when it was defeated, but they are quite different in their sources of support. Mondale was the candidate of the party establishment and important interest groups, and Palin has made a point of aligning herself with every possible anti-establishment, insurgent campaign she can find.

Contra Kornacki, Bernstein finds the comparison off:

Yes, Mondale got clobbered -- but he was clobbered by a popular incumbent president boosted by a strong economy. Under those circumstances, it didn't really matter who the Dems ran; when the electorate is happy with the incumbent, there's not very much the out-party can do about it.

Kornacki responds. Ken Silverstein wagers that she doesn't even have a shot at the vice presidency. Of all these, I trust John Ellis' judgment the most. Yes, he's Bush's cousin, but his insights are always worth reading. I think he's dead on here:

As the Republican avalanche of 2010 builds -- and I saw a poll the other day of a Democratic-leaning state Senate district on Long Island where the "right track" (8%)/"wrong direction" (83%) was unlike anything I had ever seen -- Palin has smartly positioned herself as the champion of the conservative counter-revolution. By December, she will almost certainly be the de facto front-runner for the GOP presidential nomination.

By the time the Establishment GOP wakes up to this reality, it may be too late for them to do anything about it.(continued)

Even Chrissy "Tingle" Matthews and the Trig birther can read the tea leaves and the internal Dem polls. Get used to saying "President Palin" folks. As I've said before, she'll get $2 million dollars from my fundraising if she runs, whereas I'll send Mitt or Huckleberry one of those peso notes we used to do up for Jorge.

Andrew Sullivan writes:

"She's too stupid" is what the Establishment GOP really thinks about Sarah Palin. "Good-looking," but a "ditz." This is unfertile ground, since Palin can turn the argument on a dime and say: "They drive the country into bankruptcy, they underwrite Fannie and Freddie, they bail out Goldman Sachs, they fight wars they don't want to win, they say enforcing the immigration laws is silly and they call me stupid! I'll give you a choice: you can have their smarts or my stupidity, which one do you want?" A large number of GOP presidential primary voters will take Palin's "stupidity" in a heartbeat.

Andrew Sullivan gets it. The only thing I would add is that the majority of Democrats, both office holders and in the media, also think - and want you to think - that Sarah Palin is 'stupid'. They too, will be upended by their own arrogance and have to deal with the folly of their sneering condescension toward the Tea Party folks, just like the GOP 'establishment' that gave us John McCain as 'our' presidential candidate in 2008. Never again. Palin in 2012!

“Andrew Sullivan gets it.”

Actually, he spends 98% of each day in drug-induced derangement. But like a broken pocket watch which is right tqo times a day, Sully has an occasional lucid moment or two when he realizes what a serious threat Sarah Palin is to the leftist agenda. This scares him so much that he fires up the bong again and spaces out until he can’t think any more.

Let them think she is stupid. Reagan played this belief to his advantage constantly. It creates a huge blind spot for your enemies to fall into. You have much more foreground and background to play in before you come up on their radar. It is a beautiful thing for arrogance to blind your enemy.

Unfortunately Sarah is part of the ‘fix the borders and then have comprehensive immigration reform(Amnesty)’. She will never get my vote until she takes the correct stand on the illegal immigration issue and that is enforce current laws.

I believe you’re wrong on her views regarding amnesty. Please do your homework.

The one thing the Palin hater are loathed to admit is Palin just has natural political instincts..she just street smart and gut savvy and for all the million dollar talk heads to see themselves get repeatedly flanked by what they see as some “dumb hick chick”...they can't accept in

Politics is war by another name and what we have is the worst type of pompous "professional" generals get all twisted up and the asses kick by some "uppity peasant" using guerrilla war

I was commenting on another thread that when you lived through it, you don't have to depend upon the rewritten history of political hacks.

The 1984 campaign was simple; amazingly, I don't recognize it as described in the article.

Consider two themes from the Repubs, 1984...

"It's Morning in America." I'm sure many here remember that ad.

"The Bear." I'm sure many remember that ad.

Lets contrast that with:

"Your taxes are going up. I'm the one who is willing to be honest with you about it." Fritz Mondale.

"Daisy Ad, part 2." Many here are aware of the scurrilous ad run during the 1964 presidential campaign, created by that high-minded individual, Bill Moyers. Since it worked so well the first time (and they were getting their @sses handed to them politically) they decided...what the heck! Cue the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young hippie music, drop a few nukes, and hey!!!

Mondale lost because people weren't willing to believe the lies against Reagan.

His choice of Ferraro, by the way, was one more example of a desperate campaign.

When "It's Morning in America" first hit the air, it was clear to everyone that Mondale had lost.

His (Mondale's) choice of Ferraro, by the way, was one more example of a desperate campaign. . .

Kinda like mcloser's choice of palin showed remarkable desperation.

However, unlike fee-rar-oh, palin gave an immediate boost (upswing) to mcloser's campaign.

Had there been anyone but mcloser as the rino presidential candidate, I think the outcome would have been a different story.

Given all the "kool-aide" drinkers for obammer, it is amazing that such an unprofessional campaign as run by the rinos, with as big a loser as mcloser as the face of the rinos,...that they came as close as they did.
