Sen. Stutzman Weighing Challenge to Bayh
Howey Politics Indiana ^ | April 10, 2009

Posted on 04/17/2009 4:55:02 PM PDT by Clintonfatigued

Republican State Sen. Marlin Stutzman confirmed for Howey Politics that he is seriously weighing a 2010 challenge to U.S. Sen. Evan Bayh. “There’s plenty of things to talk about,” Stutzman told HPI on Friday. “Sen. Bayh has been on the Banking Committee with Sen. Chris Dodd and Washington has just failed to watch out for Americans out here.” Stutzman, 32, is in his first term in the Indiana Senate - representing Kosciusko, Noble, Steuben and DeKalb counties - after three terms in the House. He serves on the Commerce, Pensions & Labor, Utilities & Technology, and Natural Resources committees. Stutzman is owner of Stutzman Farms Trucking and co-owner of Stutzman Farms. He said he would make a decision after the Indiana General Assembly concludes on April 29. He said he is concerned about the severe decline of the recreational vehicle industry in his district, adding that “There is a lot of concern about energy issues.” He added, “There’s only so much that can happen at the state level. We need more fuel efficient vehicles and that includes RVs.” Stutzman said that he has talked with former state representative Dan Dumezich of Schererville, another potential GOP challenger to Bayh, who will be seeking his third term. He said he would talk with Dumezich once the session is over, adding, “We’ll put our best foot forward.”

First term as state senator...32 years old? Anybody else? I mean he sounds like a great candidate for a future run, but we need serious power to take out Evan.

I do wish Sutzman well if he runs. I don’t know much about him.

Evan Bayh has spooked out strong competition for years now.

That is a shame, but there has to be a conservative out there somewhere with experience that can at least make Evan Bayh sweat a little...Sheesh. Democrats at least in some cases put up strong candidates that lose but at least makes the Republicans work a bit for their election win.

Either one, but Mike Pence has the “star power” to take on Evan. You thought of two great names. I hope they give it a try. I bet Mike could beat Evan.

Oh my gosh, oh my gosh.

I know his family and his cousin is married to my cousin. He comes from a great but different background.

He would make a GREAT Senator.

Oh, well. He’s thinking of challenging Evan Bayh, not Brad Pitt.

Any chance Bayh will retire?

“Any chance Bayh will retire?”

I don’t see that happening. He’s young, locally popular, and wahe s the runner-up for Obama’s Vice President last year.

If Mr. Stutzman runs he will get his butt kicked by Sen. Bayh. Dan Coats saw it coming and he retired(quit).

Bayh would have been Veep, if it weren’t for Mitch Daniels. The Rodents did not want Daniels to be appointing a Republican to replace Bayh.

True. I like the sound of this guy, but maybe he should wait six years? Evan’s kind of entrenched right now. We don’t want to waste prime talent on a race that (at least as of now) we are unlikely to win.

Bayh has relied heavily on Clinton money for his past few campaigns. SInce that well has dried up, he’s been trying to protray himself as more conservative: Organizing “blue dogs in the Senate in Dec etc.

It’s way past time for Bye Bye Bayh campaign in the state. But IMO Pence or even “Mitch” would have better luck in taking him out.

OTOH who is going to take Lugar’s place if the rumors about his health are true?
