Gannett Fails One-Newspaper Communities/Counties- Port Huron Times Herald a Queue for Government Intervention?
In particular, with today’s concentration of all reporting medium with just a few companies- who determines the void or lack of reporting in the best interest to citizens.
I’ve challenged a Gannett newspaper, the Times Herald of Port Huron Michigan of its obligation citizens in one-newspaper counties.
There appears to be an immediate need to make certain legislation be brought requiring corporate newspapers to better report news and serving the communities they cover.
At a crucial time with the 2004 Primary literally days away- this particular newspaper, as I am sure is the case across America where the public’s best interest is not served by corporations like Gannett and their papers like the Port Huron Michigan Times Herald.
What happened to the emphasis of fair reporting in the print media, and mandated their mandated obligations to areas of service?
I seem to recall the day local newspapers were required to file reports confirming they complied with obligations to markets served.

The Times Herald serves citizens of St. Clair County and Sanilac County Michigan as the sole daily, nationally owned newspaper. In fact, USA Today is also published side-by-side with the Times Herald.

I have no reason to believe the lack of reporting is politically inclined, rather just poorly staffed with editors and a weak publisher.
The Times Herald has sat on several stories, all verified and written that if reported would certainly if published, would have tremendous affects on our primary and general elections in 2004.
Is it the case our media outlets must no longer solicit reader or listener comments for submission to regulatory agencies?
With just story reported from Port Huron Michigan of the several stories held back in “blackout mode”, national media from San Jose to papers throughout the country found that story newsworthy to report.
Is it time we take serious how serious a problem America suffers with this controlled media? --------------------

I don't think that a case can be made to force a newspaper to drop their liberal agenda. That said, such past behavior can be used to appeal to the government to halt any buyouts or mergers of newspapers that would drop a city to one daily paper.
The only way to solve this is to start a better newspaper.
Internet news is the antidote. There are minimal distribution costs compared to physical newspapers and TV NEWS. Drudge for the most part just repackages other sites' news, but he can make a story that is burried deep in the New York Times into the lead story on his website.
