Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Argh! I loved that concert but I skipped class for it and now it's going to bite me in the butt! I don't understand this - and it's on the test...

Hey ladies, guess what? I've narrowed my grad school choices to nine!
Stanford
U Michigan
U Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
U Colorado Boulder
U Oregon
U Maryland
Colorado State
Northwestern
U New Mexico
They're listed in my order of preference. As far as I can tell, the first three are top-tier, the second three good solid schools, and the last three less impressive schools that still have nice programs.
Suzi, if you happen to know anything about these schools from your son's experiences, please share!

Here's a "dirty" effort I put together for Word for the Day class once when we were supposed to use 5 of our Words. You're right if you think some of the fancy words are used incorrectly, it was done in fun:
The bibulous dilettante assiduously and ineluctably slid his Brobdingnagian trammel into the lubricious circumambient (formerly moribund and nugatory) cynosure, rendering it more dilatory and coruscating, causing stentorian cries of ebullience and vituperation. She thought atrabiliously, "In this fashion I won't get invidious revanche on this jejune goof by promulgating a new homo sapiens, and it's a good thing for him I'm too munificent and eleemosynary to call insouciantly the raffish constabulary!"

Good Lord! Have you seen the live feed of Baghdad?? It looks like it's under a cloud of smoke!
I've been so busy with the care packages all day that I never even thought to log onto the live feed. Just did and am just stunned! Great grey clouds billowing over!
And still...there go the cars driving by...

Ok! Goodnight, sis! I'll put the finishing touches on these packages this weekend, then wait till after the mail comes Monday to seal them up, just in case something comes in the mail that should be included.

People just avoid us nutcasesNo, I was just running late, honestly. Actually I can sympathize, because I had the same kind of thing happen to me after we had to put down the dog I grew up with. For quite a while afterwards, I kept looking up or turning around expecting to see her. Never did.

Saw "The Core" and it was pretty good, not as stupid as I had thought it would be! It was a pretty stereotypical disaster-type SF story, but well done I think. The science made some sense, there were only a few things that required suspending disbelief, and it did well maintaining the stereotypes... several big disasters, lots of people dying, 3.5 noble sacrifices, and the smart scientists saving the day. Rose and I enjoyed it!

Miss Whyisa was drooling at two orifices when I first posted that.

Those pictures are so sweet Hair! Monster kitty was a good thing to help ease the pain of Logan's going.

Suzi, if you happen to know anything about these schools from your son's experiences, please share!I was chatting with him on IM last night, and he still hasn't decided. He's gonna take the general GRE in the summer, then take the specialized GREs for Computer Science and Math in the Fall. I didn't even know they HAD the special ones. He says they're like the SAT IIs, only much harder!
He's going to stay in the Burgh for the summer. He'll be doing some research with one of his Profs the early part of the summer, then he's gonna take a Statistics class during the Summer session.
I know Stanford's good, and I think SSQ has a friend from Grad school who taught at Urbana-Champaign, but I don't know about any of the others.

Drooling can be fun......... ;^)
To: 2Jedismom
LOL! You're going to send them the Chapel Hill newspaper? If I'd a known that I would have tried to find a better paper to use as packing!
