WASHINGTON, Tuesday, April 5.
Mr. CONNESS, of California, presented to the Senate a memorial of the American Ethnographical Society, in favor of sending a commission to the unknown parts of Eastern Asia, for diplomatic, commercial and agricultural purposes, as proposed by Surgeon McGOWAN, United States Army. Gov. MORGAN also submitted a memorial from the American Institute, commending the comprehensive enterprise of Dr. MCGOWAN, as one which "cannot fail to increase the number and variety of our agricultural products, and which must lead to the acclimatizing of various useful animals, giving an impetus to our foreign commerce, and promoting generally the cause of science and civilization." The Institute urges the "adoption of such resolutions as may secure to the proposed commission of exploration, not only such aid as will be satisfactory to its enlightened projector, but, at the same time, be creditable to our great and growing nation." Various other learned and industrial bodies have joined in memorializing Congress on the same subject.

Good morning Professor.
I didn’t locate the “treasonous sentiment,” part.
Could you expound on the treasonous sentiment?
Thanks

Excerpt of speech of Rep. Alexander Long (D-OH), April 8, 1864.
“I believe now that there are but two alternatives, and these are, either an acknowledgment of the independence of the South as an independent nation, or their complete subjugation and extermination as a people, and of these alternatives I prefer the former... I do not believe there can be any prosecution of the war against a sovereign State under the Constitution, and I do not believe that a war so carried on can be prosecuted so as to render it proper, justifiable, or expedient. An unconstitutional war can only be carried on in an unconstitutional manner, and to prosecute it further under the idea of the gentleman from Pennsylvania [Mr. Stevens], as a war waged against the Confederate States as an independent nation, for the purpose of conquest and subjugation, as he proposes, and the Administration is in truth and in fact doing, I am equally opposed.”

Thanks.
Treasonous sentiment?
Nevermind, Trump is experiencing expost facto laws, 1st and 6th Amendment violations of his rights
Oh well, the more things change the more they stay the same.

The second won out with General Sherman.
These threats to civil rights occur during emergencies. In 1864 we were engaged in a great civil war.
In 2024 Donald Trump is an existential threat to the deep state.
“In 2024 Donald Trump is an existential threat to the deep state.”
