Amazon’s “magical” AI grocery store technology exposed—it was actually 1,000 Indians…

There’s this meme that’s been cracking everyone up online. It jokes that AI isn’t some next-level tech marvel. Instead, picture this: 5,000 people in India, just sitting around, answering all our queries. It’s a funny take on the whole AI scene and pokes fun at the idea that maybe, just maybe, the big players like Big Tech, Big Pharma, and the government are pulling one over on us.

It's also funny that comments at source indicate that some people believe this story and are calling for Amazon to go to prison.

I don’t remember the name of the short story in an old sci-fi magazine but it was about a huge wall of computers which could answer any question. The computer answered with a print-out.

Of course, behind the computer was a compartment with a laconic guy and a typewriter.

I had a couple of pleasant conversations with Indian tech support, and one thing I’ve noticed they’re very pleasant to talk to and they have a hard time getting off the phone. For instance if you say “have a good day” they come back with a like response and maybe some more and you answer that, and they answer that, and you answer that and they answer that... it takes a long time to end the call. I usually tell them that I have to get back to work now and thank you very much and of course they respond with thank you very much and I hope that you’re... it must be cultural.

I think that would make for a great Halloween or April Fool’s gag for an IT group.

Have some team wheel out an old-timey workstation with a monitior, keyboard, printer, and some sort of mysterious box with wires hooking everything up. The older the better.

Describe the device as an early failed AI project from [year] that had to be shelved because the company [lost millions] trying to [get it to work/market].

Invite people to ask it questions and receive answers via printout/readout.

In reality, it’s just a wireless connection to somebody (or group!) in the building waiting for questions and giving specious [but amusing, almost right, and work-safe] answers.

Sounds line a way to hang on to pleasant call and avoid a bad one.

I’ve wondered if some of these things being called AI were really just older computer technology using a database. Now it turns out that it could even be that a gazillion low paid offshore contractors might be called AI.

Is this a satire site? It’s difficult to tell these days.

I’ve experienced the same. This tells me they are paid by the hour, not per call.

There was a MAD magazine story many, many years ago when computers were used for the first time to predict elections. When the election was over, you saw what was inside the mighty RCA computer; a guy, a bottle, and a dartboard.

LOL, I get that nowadays...but this is indeed a joke, and they say so right off the bat, which I appreciated.

Otherwise, I look at it and think “Is this the Babylon Bee?”

Satire is nearly impossible today, as it is far too close to reality.

Amazon phone support ("agent please") has been exception for me, in stark contrast to Comcast (monopoly). The "AI" here sounds like https://answers.microsoft.com , and which often fails to solve dilemmas and locks the forums.
