IN ASSEMBLY, March 12, 1864.
AN ACT, relative to Common Schools in the City of New-York.
Introduced by unanimous consent by Mr. Benedict read twice, and referred to the Committee on Colleges, Academies and Common Schools, Reported favorably from said committee, and committed to the Committee of the Whole.
The People of the State of New-York, represented in Senate and Assembly, do enact as follows:
SECTION 1. The City of New-York is hereby divided into seven school districts, as follows:
First District -- First, Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth and Fourteenth Wards.
Second District -- Seventh, Tenth and Thirteenth Wards.
Third District -- Eighth, Ninth and Fifteenth Wards.
Fourth District -- Eleventh and Seventeenth Wards.
Fifth District -- Sixteenth and Twentieth Wards.
Sixth District -- Eighteenth and Twenty-first Wards.
Seventh District -- Twelfth, Nineteenth and Twenty-second Wards.
SEC. 2. At every Charter election in the said City there shall be elected in each school district one Commissioner of Common Schools, who shall take office on the first day of January next after his election, and hold office for the term of three years; and there shall also be elected in each Ward one Trustee of Common Schools, who shall take office on the first day of January next after his election, and hold office for the term of five years; and no school officer shall hereafter be elected or appointed in the said City except as provided by this act, and no person shall at the same time hold more than one school office.
SEC. 3. On the second Wednesday in January, one thousand eight hundred and sixty-six, the Mayor of the City shall nominate to the Board of Education one person for each school district, as a Commissioner of Common Schools,
