SOUTHERN NEWS: General Sherman’s Invasion of Mississippi; CONFUSION IN THE REBEL FINANCES (3/5/1864)
New York Times - Times Machine ^ | 3/5/1864

Our late files of Richmond papers furnish us the following interesting extracts in addition to those already published:

THE WAR IN MISSISSIPPI.

GEN. SHERMAN'S MOVEMENTS.

The Richmond Enquirer of Feb. 22, collects the following extracts from Southern journals, which show that SHERMAN frightened the rebels pretty effectually. It says:

"The accounts we get from Mobile are encouraging. The defences are said to be almost impregnable, with line after line of defences, with admirably constructed redoubts, all around the city. An officer of the army, who left Mobile on the 13th, represents everything quiet in the city, and not the least evidence of apprehension or alarm on the part of the citizens. No person of either sex or age had scarcely paid any attention to the notification of the Commanding-General, so little is the concern as to the boasted attack of the Yankees."

The Mobile Tribune, speaking of the rumored advance of the enemy, says:

"Mr. J.B. ELLIS, messenger of the Pioneer Express Company, reports that, from all that could be gathered from rumor at Meridian, the destination of the Yankees is undoubtedly Mobile. He saw a Federal cap that had been captured after the Yankees crossed Pearl River, with a red ribbon around it, on which the words 'Mobile or Hell' were printed in large letters."

The Register says:

"The enemy seems to have been found at last, and has turned up north of the Southern Road, near Decatur. This place is about thirty miles from Meridian. Report says the Yankees are taking it quite leisurely, not having the fear of Gen. POLK before their eyes, we suppose. We trust they will be taught a better appreciation of Gens. FORREST and LEE before they get through."
