NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Authorities have exhumed the body of the wife of a famed former Tennessee sheriff more than a half-century after she was fatally shot in a still-unsolved killing.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation confirmed that it oversaw the exhumation of the body of Pauline Pusser on Thursday at Adamsville Cemetery. She was killed by incoming gunfire while in a car driven by her husband, McNairy County Sheriff Buford Pusser, a figure whose legend was captured in the 1973 film “Walking Tall” starring Joe Don Baker and a 2004 remake starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
Various sites in Adamsville continue to attract tourists interested in the sheriff’s legacy in west Tennessee.
A TBI statement said the agency received a new tip that led agents to find that there was never an autopsy performed on Pauline Pusser’s body.

The Tennessean cited an Aug. 13, 1967, publication of its newspaper that says Pauline Pusser was killed and her husband was “seriously wounded in the jaw when Pusser’s prowl car was fired on at dawn on a lonely country road.”

Investigators found 14 spent 30-caliber cartridges on the road where Pusser said the shooting occurred about three miles from the state line, according to The Tennessean. The Pusser car was hit 11 times.
In the archived news article, The Tennessean quoted an investigator who said they believed the couple had driven into a trap.

Pusser himself was killed in a car wreck a few years after has wife's death. I suspect another remake of the movie is in the works.

Joe baker was great in the movie- I didn’t see the one with the rock- probably not as good.

Why? Is TBI bored or lacking meaningful work to do? Isn’t this stupid and unnecessary?
Exhumation is a drastic step. My guess is that the original autopsy leaves something to be desired and the authorities now have a highly specific claim that a precise bullet trajectory or bullet fragments might confirm.
The murder was always attributed to the Dixie Mob. Slick Willie’s mother and uncle supposedly had connections to the Dixie Mob through its affiliates in Little Rock.
Buford Pusser died in August 1974 in a car wreck the day he agreed to portray himself in the ``Walking Tall″ sequel.

I’m wondering if they’re looking for evidence of drugging or bullet matches to determine if it was all a setup...
And why would a government org spend that much money and effort on it? To revise history...
If that is the case, perhaps They may be able to match it to bullets on record from criminals.
The TBI, like the FBI, should be devoting its full resources to ferreting out illegal aliens.
Trying to solve a 50 year old murder case is quite ludicrous.

see rock did one movie where he was a hitman- who got revenge, which I thought he did an OK job- can’t remeber the name of it now- but yeah, he ain’t the greatest actor out there for,sure
Can’t imagine what they think that they’ll find, unless her body was a repository of evidence stashed by Buford to further shake the tree and he died before it was to be useful.

My dad took my brothers and me to see Walking Tall when it came out. I was the youngest at 13. This was his kind of movie, gritty and intense.
Pusser had met and approved actor Bo Svenson playing him for the sequel.
Possible. Not likely.

As is higher power .30 cartridges that will easily pass through a body? Not likely.
