Weekly Garden Thread - January 20-26, 2024 [Seed Catalogs 101 Edition]

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We DO post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Gardeners, Farmers, and Horticulturists have a role to play in confronting and combating dishonest climate change radicals. Implementing their agenda could result in major disruption to the plant life of this planet, and, by extension, to us.

How much CO2 is in the atmosphere? How much is needed before plants start dying off?

Plants start to die if CO2 goes below .002% of atmosphere. (Take that crazy Madistanian climate kooks!) Here is another link that confirms the CO2 % mentioned in the video short

My Mom likes to buy her Black Label BACON at Menard’s when it goes on sale, LOL!

Menard’s is great. I’ve never been disappointed shopping there. We’ve been buying all the Chicken Coop/Barn Remodel items there. (11% rebates!) The Garden Center is pretty good, too. I usually find a few things there, though they did have Roses last summer that were BADLY infested with Aphids. I mean, you could SEE them on EVERY plant! Yuck!

I told the Manager. It was the right thing to do. It was pretty awful. They were the nice ‘Knockout’ roses, too. :(

Last week was another nasty one here in Central Missouri. More cold, snow, ice, etc. Freezing rain last night - still coming down - driveway is like a skating rink - it’s a good day to stay home.

Yesterday was just semi-terrible outside so I took advantage and fixed the water pipe that froze and broke out in the pasture last week. I didn’t bother to replace the busted valve - I just capped it off with a piece of PEX. When the weather warms up I’m going to remove what’s there now, replace it with a freeze-proof hydrant, and have one less thing to worry about during cold weather.

It’s our turn in the barrel this week for freezing rain. I hate that more than anything. I’ll take ‘feets and feets’ of snow over that, any day. ugh!

My excuse for not being active on the gardening thread is that I don’t do much gardening any more. This thread about catalogues has brought me out of my shell. We had a garden in the backyard until the trees got to tall and then I gardened in church yards (one at a time). But that eventually fizzled out.

On the farm when I was growing up, We got catalogues from Earl May, Henry Field, Gurneys? and Starks. Earl May and Gurneys had what was called a Conglomerate Package. Youngsters could put there penny in with your parents order and receive a envelope with a wide variety of vegetable and flower seeds, most of which were different than most people would not get. I got okra, caster beans, yard long beans, a large yellowish bean (seed), cushaw, (excellent for pumpkin pie - Mother best pie ever was a cushaw chiffon), cosmos, and other flowers.

Would be nice if there were something like that for our posterity.

Great memories!

My Maternal Grandma taught me all about growing vegetables, how to bake bread and pies, and how to butcher.

My Paternal Grandma taught me how to grow flowers, taught me about art, music and literature and how to be a ‘Lady’ in all Social situations. (Those ‘lady lessons’ never really stuck, LOL!)

I had the best of both worlds and remember pouring over seed catalogs with both of them in the winter months...dreaming about Spring. :)
