The global cycling community has been left in a state of shock after the sudden demise of Melissa Dennis Hoskins, a retired professional cyclist and an ex-world champion. The unfortunate event took place on New Year’s Eve when Melissa was reportedly knocked down by a grey ute on Avenel Gardens Road. Despite immediate medical attention, she lost her battle for life in the hospital. This news has left a profound impact on the sports fraternity globally, causing disbelief amongst fans and athletes.

Witnesses stated that Melissa was struck by a vehicle just after 8 pm on Saturday, leading to the urgent call of emergency services to the scene. The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) confirmed the sad news on Monday, stating that Melissa Hoskins had tragically lost her life in a vehicular accident in the southern part of Australia.

Melissa’s untimely death has elicited a wave of grief and sorrow worldwide. Numerous European reports highlighted her relationship with fellow cyclist Rohan Dennis, displaying images of the couple with their children, and even wedding day photographs. Dennis had recently posted a family picture on Instagram wishing everyone a “Merry Christmas from our family to yours.”

Melissa’s former team, now known as Jayco AlUla, expressed their deep sorrow, sharing, “We are devastated to learn of the passing of former GreenEDGE Cycling rider Melissa Dennis nee Hoskins. Our thoughts are with her family and friends and the whole cycling community at this deeply saddening time. She will never be forgotten. RIP Mel.”

Although initial reports shed light on Rohan Dennis’s arrest and subsequent charges in connection to the incident, the spotlight for many remains on remembering Melissa Hoskins. Her impressive career and her role as a devoted mother of two have been underscored.

Social media users also shared their grief and remembrances. @hollycamefrom posted, “Melissa Hoskins was a beautiful woman and a belter of a cyclist. We must remember her.” This sentiment was reiterated by 9 News television, who portrayed her as “a champion on the cycling stage and an adoring mother of two, this was Melissa Dennis (née Hoskins) and in the prime of her life.”

The cycling world has indeed lost a genuine champion. Melissa Dennis Hoskins will be remembered not just for her extraordinary achievements in professional cycling, but also for being a loving mother. As the community grieves her sudden departure, the emphasis remains on honouring her legacy and the significant impact she made on the sport.

This is confusingly written. It says she was accidentally knocked down by a UTE (utility vehicle). Mentions her husband, then later mentions his "arrest and subsequent charges in connection to the incident" which is then referred to as a vehicle accident.

Does this make any more sense to you than it does to me?

Not shockingly, it’s a poorly written article that leaves out a lot of information that would tie the narrative together better. Typical modern “journalism.”

That’s terrible.

Which is why I ride against traffic. I ride my cheap ‘mountain’ bike 2 or 3 times a week, on the rural asphalt road near our house, for about a mile to get to a 2 mile deadend loop (which is 2/3 gravel). So, it is only about 4 miles total.

My head is on a swivel as I ride against the occasional vehicle traffic, switching to the right ‘lane’ if someone is coming at me. (I have ‘defense’ measures with me, if I should need those)

I try to set a quick pace, because I’m not interested in riding all that long. I never have liked sitting on the narrow seat, even though mine is padded.

Here is a better article

World champion cyclist Rohan Dennis has reportedly been charged by police with causing the death of his wife after she was hit by a car on Saturday. South Australia Police said a 32-year-old woman suffered serious injuries and died in hospital in Adelaide overnight. A statement added that a man, 33, had been arrested and charged with causing death by dangerous driving, driving without due care and endangering life.

The driver was known to the woman and has been released on bail until March. It has been widely reported in Australian media that the man and woman are Dennis and his wife Melissa Hoskins.

Hoskins was a world champion in the team pursuit in 2015 and raced at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympics....

Correct, such as her age at the time of her death.

Doesn’t it also say that she was hit on New Years Eve on Saturday at 8 PM? Even down under, New Years Eve was not Saturday.

She was run down by her husband. In Australia they call that an accident, even clever, she was knocked down.

Murdered would be better term. Next question is why?

Fair dinkum. It happened in Australia and was clearly written by an Aussie.

That was my first guess too. They had a fight earlier, he tried to scare her, misjudged and took her out?

Ute: In America, it’s an Indian Tribe. In Australia, it’s a motor vehicle.
