The bacteria create multiple substances that are then absorbed.

Acetate, butyrate, and propionate are all very helpful to cellular processes. Soluble fiber specifically helps bacteria that make these for us.

My grandmother made the most excellent navy bean soup. She grew up on a farm, cooking for a big table of field hands, and continued after she got married cooking for weekly big suppers at the church.

Anyway, like I was sayin’, beans is the fruit of the land. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey’s uh, bean-kabobs, bean creole, bean gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There’s pineapple beans, lemon beans, coconut beans, pepper beans, shrimp beans, beans stew, beans salad, beans and potatoes, beans burger, beans sandwich. That- that’s about it.

“Good to know. I love beans, and it’s time for a crockpot full of pinto beans with ham hocks now that the weather has finally cooled off.”

I like the 15 Bean package. Throw them in the crockpot with garlic, onion, jalapenos and stew meat. Yum.

“The Army, Air Force and Marines are claiming discrimination. No word yet from the Coast Guard.”

We could rename them Jarhead Beans.

In the Navy they get steak, caviar and whipped cream cake
They have fancy cooks who know what cookin’ means
In the Army we get mess, and it really is a mess
Oh, the Navy gets the gravy, but the Army gets the beans
(Beans, beans, beans, beans, beans, beans, beans)

Have you ever made pozole? It’s very tasty.

Our daughter had a subscription to sunbasket for a while, and got this recipe from there. It’s the one she uses.

We often top with shredded or diced smoked chicken. Fabulous!

And then when followed by prostrations...better have GasX on hand.

If you eat beans regularly, the gaseous effect may be mitigated.

Yet many of us live on near fiberless diets. Fiber is not needed to have gut bacteria. Gut bacteria vary with what is present. When fiber is present in the diet, the primary function of the extra bacteria is to provide things THEY need from the fiber.

https://www.thecarnivoredietcoach.com/news/carnivore-diet-gut-microbiome

From a website attacking the carnivore diet:

“As mentioned earlier, the lack of plant-based fibers in a carnivore diet may lead to reduced production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). SCFAs are crucial for maintaining a healthy gut lining and reducing inflammation. A decrease in SCFA production can potentially compromise gut health and increase the risk of inflammatory conditions...

...Dysbiosis, an imbalance in the gut microbiome, can result from significant changes in diet. A carnivore diet may increase the risk of dysbiosis by reducing the diversity of gut bacteria and altering bacterial metabolism. Dysbiosis has been linked to various health issues, including IBD, obesity, and mental health disorders.”

https://carnivoresdigest.com/carnivore-diet-can-impact-your-gut-microbiome/

But...what if SCFAs are “crucial” for healing problems CAUSED by the fiber? After all, many of us can report having less problems with our bowels after going very low fiber. In fact, many report being “healed” of leaky gut and other problems SCFAs are supposed to help.

Many report being CURED of “IBD, obesity, and mental health disorders” after going keto/carnivore.

It is a bit like defining saturated fats as “bad” and then saying eating lots of meat is bad because it has saturated fats. Circular reasoning.

Define “good bacteria” as bacteria that digests fiber, and fiber becomes “essential”. Yet in the real world...many of us almost never eat fiber and have zero issues.

“Remember you need butyrate producing bacteria in your gut because butyrate is the preferred fuel for the cells that line your gut.

It was once thought of as the only fuel for gut epithelial cells. But in vitro research has shown this to not be true.

Although it is true that butyrate can be produced from the fermentation of dietary fiber and that it can enter the gut’s epithelial cells and be oxidized in the mitochondria. This is not the optimal nutrient source, due to other factors that cause problems downstream.

A better option is the use of protein fermentation, where you are able to get iso butyrate which has the same signaling function and can be used in epithelial cells, with no sub-optimal downstream effects.

There is also evidence that ketones can enter from the basal lateral side (from the side facing the bloodstream)

This is why fiber was once thought of as the only source able to supply short chain fatty acids but this we now know is not true.”
