The next generation of the Toyota Camry, the best-selling sedan in the U.S. market, will come with only a gas-electric hybrid powertrain, the boldest move yet by the Japanese automaker to push hybrid technology into the heart of the U.S. market.
The 2025 Camry will combine a 2.5-liter gasoline engine with an electric drive system tuned to deliver more power in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions of the car, Toyota said.
Compliance with tougher U.S. fuel economy rules was a factor in Toyota’s decision to make the new Camry an all-hybrid vehicle line, dropping four- and six-cylinder combustion models that made up about 85% of sales in the current model year, David Christ, head of the Toyota brand in North America, told Reuters. Another factor behind the decision was “the performance we were able to get out of the hybrid,” he said. …

It’s like the early ‘70s Dodge Dart
Weekly I get stick behind someone making bad driving decisions driving a Camry.
We used to say, “it’s always someone in a Dodge Dart”
Now even the kids say, “it’s always someone driving a Camry.”
IOW, it’s Biden’s fault.
It’s the drivers, then. Most Camrys are not slow cars, not even the four-cylinder non-hybrids. Can’t fault the general reliability.
Because even those who buy economy cars demand "performance", I imagine that the Camry can only go about 20 miles on a full tank.
A true hybrid would give you as much range on gas as on battery.

I pray that it fails miserably, costs Toyota billions, and teaches them a lesson. That’s one good thing about Toyota, they’re teachable.
I wonder if Lexus (= Toyota built with lockwashers :-) ) will follow suit?

It is 13.2 gallons. This may be less a event than the media is saying. The drive train is to be electric, powered by the engine and battery — largely the same as most locomotives.
The car will get 52 mpg, because of city driving being battery. 10 minutes on a highway and the normal engine takes over.
Most of this story is simply Toyota is going to build a Camry with a smaller engine that hauls a battery around.
The present and recent Camry hybrids have been the most trouble-prone of the model.
Most popular type is the LE. Now they have to take that away from the buying public.

I like the idea of a hybrid. I actually owned a Corolla hybrid until June. Just too small and noisy. Didn’t want to pay the price for a Camry. Getting 60 miles to the gallon when I drive like an old person was very nice. And not having to plug it in even nicer.
Well, used to be before the 2025 model year, you weren’t left without a choice. Now the most popular version of the Camry will no longer be available. All thanks to regulations by a usurper regime.
We got a high-mileage “cherry” (lady took it to the dealer for everything including tires, a battery and wiper blades!!) 2015 Lexus RX350 for fairly cheap (for a Lexus) we like it...we plan to replace it with a “Plug in” hybrid Lexus...40+ miles “around town” electric only range, and not a problem driving 450+ miles to Vegas on one tank of gas. Sorta “Best of Both Worlds”.
I bought a 2006 Hybrid Lexus 400h on the recommendation of my mechanic who owns 2 and is also a wholesaler.
Two other mutual friends have also bought the same model. Never though I’d buy a hybrid, especially and old one. It rates as one of the best used vehicles to own in regards to minimal repairs needed. You can expect 300,000 miles if taken care of.
Gets 20 MPG, burns regular gas and is very comfortable and loaded with all the goodies.
Funny thing is people often pay more for comparable Toyota models where the Lexus is built better and is usually better taken care of by the original owners because they paid so much for it.
As long as other buyers reject the idea of owning an older Lexus hybrid the prices will remain low.
Toyota has been building hybrids since 1997. If I happen to see you broke down on the road I’ll give you a lift or a tow! Mine came with a factory hitch and All Wheel Drive.

I am sick and #@$% tired of the auto industry just rolling over, accepting this 🦬💩 and not fighting back!
Consumers are fed-the-hell-up having to just absorb increasing costs and lower quality crap because of this!
