Are you eating enough of this healthy diet staple? It comes in a can, but experts swear it’s essential

When most people think of the so-called “superfoods” recommended for healthy living, something out of a can doesn’t generally come to mind.

But one expert says there’s a shelf-stable supermarket staple that’s an essential part of every balanced diet — and most of us aren’t eating enough of it. Cans of fatty fish — including sardines, mackerel and anchovies — provide a big boost to brain health, due to high levels of omega-3, Dr. Michael Moseley told the Daily Mail.

“Omega-3 is an essential fatty acid, which means it is vital for our health but, unfortunately, your body can’t produce it, so the only way to get enough of it is through your diet,” Moseley said. He added, “Among other things, it keeps your brain cells healthy and talking to each other.”

Its still very important to make people hysterical about such things because of rules like those for California. The Baltic sprats I get from Latvia even have some stupid warning about contaminants and I dont think those started with the EU. Life is fraught with perils and despite our best effort we die anyway.

Very wrong. Sardines have the lowest mercury content off all canned fish.

Omega-3 - yes, lot's of it.

Well, yes. Public fear and anxiety are highly useful to tyrants and marketing dweebs.

Depends what you mean by “last”. Like other canned foods they are safe as long as the can isnt compromised. How long its palatable is another question. Different fish have a different length of time depending on who packed them and what/how its packed but you dont really want to go past expiration on things like sardines and mackerel. They tend to quickly smell much worse rather rapidly which can effect your willingness and enjoyment even if the nutrition is the same.

Historically the pouches of course didnt exist and at least until recently the retort package was much more costly per ounce.

A little bit of caviar on some deviled eggs is totally amazing—once you try it you are ruined for life.

I just bought a wonderful book, Eat to Beat Disease, by Wm. Li, MD.

Beer is actually extremely good for you. As good for your heart as red wine, without raising your blood pressure, as red wine does. .

Go get the book, and discover other wonderful beer effects on your body.

I don’t even like beer, but now drink a 7-oz bottle every night. It’s growing on me. I weigh 116, but a larger person could handle much more.

Beer isn’t the only surprise in the book. Other foods prevent cancer, heart disease, and other serious diseases. Purple potatoes are one surprise. Read the book for 300+ pages of surprising healthful foods,

Yes indeed, sardines are good sources of Omega 3 fats. I buy Alaskan Salmon Burgers at Costco. They have Alaskan salmon too. Many stores do. Try to get fish that is not farmed and comes from Alaska or other far-north places.

“CALO”

“Calo cat food is manufactured in North Carolina with the highest quality ingredients sourced from local vendors. This pet food company understands how important it is to give cats high-quality nutrition through their products.”

I’ve never heard of it but, since I’m in NC...I should’ve. Sounds like a wholesome pet food. You probably didn’t suffer too much, LOL.

So eating a fish that wasn’t smart enough not to get caught is supposed to make you smarter?

I’ve recently come to enjoy sardines.

About three months back I had a blood test the results of which said i had to get healthier.

I travel frequently for my job. Almost every dinner has been fish, mostly salmon.

Sardines are frequent for lunch on weekends. Red meat is more limited. Cut the sugar.

Result: I’ve dropped 20 pounds. No idea blood changes yet.

I've been taking Krill Oil for a while. The stuff is expensive, but no fish burbs as you get from regular fish oil. About $0.75/day.

“ Also my Mom gave me cod liver oil when I was 3 and I think she ruined me on fish for life.”

Tablespoonful taken over the kitchen sink, in case it got spilled. Kitchen sink had the cleanest oiled drain in the house.

You can get all the cod liver oil you need by just regularly incorporating some of the superfood contained in these cans these into your diet.
