They weren’t thinking, they were emoting and telling themselves they were going to invade Israel and take territory, like Russia.
Hamas knows the International community, including the US, will step in long before total destruction comes.

I do not know if this is what they were thinking but we need to understand the difference between terrorism and simple barbarism. Terrorism is actually a Marxist strategy. The goal is not conquest or terror for its own sake. Rather, it is meant to evoke an overreaction which would cause public opinion to shift to the favor of the terrorists. Of course this must be premised on the overreaction being more brutal than the initial terrorists acts. That would be hard to envision in this case. Still, the intention of Hamas may be to trigger an Israeli attack into Gaza that would be so brutal that world opinion would turn against the Israelis. If so, I think that Hamas itself may have overplayed their hand with their attack being so vicious that nothing that Israel does would cause world opinion to support Hamas.
They are the ultra violent equivalent of those “just stop oil” people blocking roads. They are making no friends, and are making lots of enemies.
Hamas members were looking for scary stories to tell by candlelight down in the dark tunnels under what used to be Gaza.
They were thinking they could stop any rapprochement between Israel and the Arab nations.
And if they can provoke Israel to go full scorched earth, they can gain sympathy throughout the Muslim world from Morocco to Indonesia.
They would like to make Israel a pariah state to substantial number of people globally if Israel uses state military forces to cause casualties and devastation in Gaza far more substantial than that caused by the terrorist non-state Hamas.
The question is whether “Israel’s 9/11” will cause them to shoot themselves in the foot the way the United States shot itself in the foot after 9/11.
It would be nice if Americans and Europeans became very familiar with the Hamas Charter. (Originally called Covenant of the Islamic Resistance Movement from 1988).

I think this war will not just be between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. It will be much larger and include many countries. Israel is in real trouble. The Hamas attack was just the opening gambit.
