IMO They were just following the orders given to them by their superiors, The Iranians.
I would be Iran said, GO! and we will back you up. But the idea is they Go! get completely destroyd by Israel retaliation. And then Iran mobilizes Libyan, Syrian Hezbolah. Softens them up and see who jumps into help ISrael.
So then once they are Spent, Iran can do what they want, Own, Libya, Syria. Or, jump in directly against Israel

People are extremely confused on who Hamas is and what their goals are. Their goal is the destruction of Israel PERIOD. They do NOt care about the long term existence of Hamas. Their goal is for an extreme Israeli response that could possibly propagate a larger conflict and draw in Iran, etc. the final big battle, that in their minds, Israel. Hamas’ goal is martyrdom. This is it, period. They have no other goals.
