At 77, Dolly Parton is justly being celebrated, along with her more established virtues, for an ability to unite disparate groups. She has, it’s claimed, an equally strong fanbase in the Trumpian “Rust Belt” as among the gay clubbers of New York City, to pick two of America’s polarised stereotypes.
Her London visit to promote a new rock-influenced double album and a book is proving just how broad that Parton cultural spectrum is. Gathered in a grand hotel last week to cheer her on and, ostensibly at least, to ask some searching questions, her admirers included a contingent of social media “influencers” in their 20s, dressed in tank tops, UK charity-shop shabby chic and man-buns. Alongside them sat hoary representatives of the British music press, some of them diehard country-music listeners.
Ever since Dolly Parton’s America, the popular podcast she inspired, took hold of audiences four years ago, details of her funding of Covid vaccine research and charitable gifts of books around the world have created a fresh image for the star. The Dolly we have now is just as soft and bubbly, but she has some harder ethical edges glinting beside the rhinestones.
Yet anyone hoping for a clear political line is going to be disappointed. Parton is too clever for that. Her opening line to Britain’s press was a jokey reference to her shiny pink and silver “rock” get-up. “My legs won’t bend in these boots,” she said.

Dolly Parton is the only celeb that my Berniebot friend and I agree on, someone who is entertaining, charitable, and doesn’t go out of her way to offend anyone.

She was on an interview and the dumb*ss reporter kept asking her which ‘side’ she was on and she refused to answer. After like 6 times she finally told him to stop asking or that would be the end of the interview.
A double-minded woman is unstable in all her ways.
Nonsense. Maybe she just doesn’t care much about politics or consider people through only that lens..

I met her backstage at the Opry one time and my cousin said it’s the only time she’s seen me speechless. Very polite lady.
Not a country music fan, but Dolly is definitely a hard working, very talented entertainer.
Good for her that she doesn’t divulge her politics. More respect.
So I paraphrase a Bible verse (James 1:8) and you claim it is nonsense.
Subjects like this certainly need to be kept out of music, but one cannot straddle the fence with even a mild countenance or mention. If Dolly is truly apolitical, then the Grauniad is libeling her.

I’m sure there are lots of people who have their own beliefs but don’t really judge others by anything as worldly as politics.
And Jesus said that we should treat everyone with kindness and forgiveness. I know lots of ‘liberals’ who are very nice people, if wrong-headed about politics.
Jesus made friends with and was kind toward all sorts of questionable people, supped with sinners and publicans, etc., in addition to telling us to ‘Judge Not’.

Look, I admire and respect Dolly Parton for the great performer that she is. Having said that I will say her political POV sucks.
Now you’re taking Jesus out of context. He made friends with people who were repentant, and who were always accused by the self-righteous ruling class.
“Judge not, that ye be not judged / for with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again” (Matthew 7:1-2) does not contradict John 7:24, which says “Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment”.
The only other woman I can think of who still looks good at 70+ is Judge Jeanine Pirro.
Your post about a ‘double minded woman’ made no sense at all in the context of this article; Dolly doesn’t come across as ‘double minded’ at all. She isn’t obliged to advertise every personal belief she might have, nor are any of us.
I suspect the post was just a chance for you to beat your Bible again.

Same here. Her new running buddy is Smiley Virus. I think that should tell anyone who wants to know about Parton’s politics.
It used to be that talking religion and politics was rude. Perhaps it’d be a better country if we returned to that. I have no clue why it’s anybody’s business what Dolly Pardon’s political beliefs are. I wish we didn’t know anybodies especially in Hollywood and sports. Leave that the the politicians.
