Why hypersonic weapons change everything (They can sink ALL of the U.S. aircraft carriers, all at once)

When it comes to all matters military, I have been following a handful of analysts among whom Croatian Admiral Davorin Domazet (retired) emerged as perhaps my favorite. He has deep and detailed command of technical matters (like Andreiy Martyanov he insists that you can’t prevail in modern warfare without deep knowledge of of advanced mathematics and probability). More importantly, he has perhaps the clearest understanding of the broad historical context of today’s clash between Russia and the western powers.

Can they fly faster than the speed of light?

Because if not, they are going to have a tough time dodging a navy’s laser anti-missile defenses.

One thing not in the article is China has a supersonic missile that flies at a very low altitude across the water. It doesn’t fly as fast as the Russian ones, but being able to practically hover the water makes it tough to both detect and intercept. I believe we currently have no antidote for that besides retaliation.

Not if they are not detected before it’s too late.

Never, never, underestimate any enemy.

Childish comment. How many lasers that work are on Navy ships? 3? 1?

Some will probably get through. Maybe more than a few. War is always unpredictable.

Radar and AWACS aircraft can look down on the sea and detect motion. These things move fast, but the are not undetectable.

Install another dozen CIWS phalanx guns per ship. Put up a wall of lead. Kinetics works both ways.

True that on our laser weapons coming a long way, a lot more than I expected. But I believe we currently can't rapid fire them (retry when we miss). I believe also the laser has to hold "contact" with the target missile for a total of a few seconds to disable it. I doubt we can do that with the supersonic targets. We're not to the point of split-second laser fire/boom like in the movies.

Think less Han Solo and more Nikola Tesla (his theoretical Teleforce he claimed to have invented).

How Russia says their missiles operate:

How they actually operate:

“ The Kinzhal flies at altitudes of between 20 and 40 km, with a maximum range of 2,000 km. When above target, it dives perpendicularly and accelerates to 15 mach, generating enormous kinetic energy in addition to its explosive payload. ”

————-

20-40km in the air is not exactly undetectable. And the hypersonic part of its flight is the perpendicular drop. I imagine we would start countermeasures when it’s launched.

Once it turns downward, it moves like a hawk diving on a mouse.

The laser defenses we don’t have except on two ships?

Also, even with laser defense systems (which currently only blind or ablate, not destroy), there is still time required to slew the mount onto the attack vector and aim, which hypersonic missiles may not allow.

To understand China’s low altitude missile, think less Luke Sylwalker land speeder and more low flying missile just a few feet above the water.

Except they built some in conjunction with India and outside observers have seen those missiles working as advertised...

Also, that crater picture is of the equivalent of our MLRS rockets, not a cruise or antishipping missile.

When above target, it dives perpendicularly and accelerates to 15 mach, generating enormous kinetic energy in addition to its explosive payload. That first strike with a single Kinzhal missile destroyed Ukraine's nuke-proof underground weapons depot. This was a message for the west.

Certainly not an expert in such things, but I don't see how it takes out a concrete bunker 500 feet underground. On the other hand, I could see it destroying entrances and air-vents, making life very difficult for anyone in the bunker though.
