MOXIE significantly reduces cardiovascular events in high-risk chronic disease patients (Education, frequent calls, emails, & in-person contacts = 22% fewer problems)
Medical Xpress / University of Calgary / Circulation ^ | March 6, 2023 | David J.T. Campbell et al

Researchers are announcing dramatic results that demonstrate a significant improvement in cardiovascular outcomes among patients who received access to a novel educational and support intervention called MOXIE.

The randomized trial is the largest study on record for a tailored patient engagement approach, showing a statistically significant reduction in clinical outcomes like hospitalizations.

4,761 participants who were ≥65 years of age and at high risk of cardiovascular disease (having one or more of coronary artery disease, stroke, chronic kidney disease, heart failure or two or more of current smoking, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol) were randomized to receive MOXIE or to receive standard care. The group that received MOXIE had a 22% lower rate of primary outcome events (incidence rate ratio [IRR] 0.78, 95%CI: 0.61-1.00, p=0.0472).

The primary endpoint was the composite rate of all-cause mortality, as well as hospitalizations

Says Dr. David Campbell: "It suggests that this unique form of regular, high-engagement communication with patients may lead to more positive health outcomes for many at the highest risk," he adds.

Using an advertising and human-centered design approach, Emergence Creative developed a brand identity that resonated with the intended audiences and a messaging system that addressed the complex factors that influence people's daily health decisions.

"This is very exciting as behavior change interventions have traditionally been very difficult to implement," says Dr. Jia Hu. "It's the type of medical intervention for cardiovascular disease that can be efficiently and economically scaled to actually improve outcomes in patients."

Created by Emergence Creative, MOXIE's personalized patient engagement platform was designed using advertising and human-centered design principles with SMES including an online portal, direct mail, daily patient check-ins and gamification—all aimed at changing daily behaviors that put patients with chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure at risk of heart attacks and strokes.

So frequent human interaction improves your chances of living?

Gee.

Who knew.

Aside from everyone.

Until the WuFlu arrived.

Then human interaction was bad, bad, bad.

So... why did so many people in nursing homes, cut off from all family and given only rudimentary attention by staff who were faceless die?

I guess it is a mystery.

From Brave AI:

Moxie is an over-the-counter drug created by Augustine Thompson in 1884.2 It has gentian root extract, which has a bitter after taste and medicinal finish.12 The flavor of Moxie is a subtle blend of wintergreen and licorice, although some people describe it as medicine, motor oil or root beer that’s “gone funky”.0

You have to admit, striving for awful flavor does make it distinctly different.

I see - so if they just nag you like an overbearing parent they see improved outcomes.

A controlled populace is a happy populace.

It is true that most soft drinks were created as patent medicines sold by flim-flam men in medicine shows.   Who would have thought that one of them would actually have a medical benefit?
Moxie is a brand of carbonated beverage that is among the first mass-produced soft drinks in the United States. It was created around 1876 by Augustin Thompson as a patent medicine called "Moxie Nerve Food" and was produced in Lowell, Massachusetts. The sweet soda is similar to root beer, with a bitter aftertaste.

We now know that is the druggist in his coat chastising you to drink this as it’s “good for you”!

Like Castor oil and cod-liver oil!

Moxie was ahead of the product marketing curve and rivaled Coca-Cola with their clever and colorful advertising.

Nearly every item (in use pre-WWI) a person can think of was used to advertise the horrible stuff.

My favorite is the horsemobile, where a jockey on a horse is standing in a ca.1915 roadster. The advertising came to life when a couple dozen cars were made for parades and live promotions.

No, it’s Modulating Oxidative Stress and Inflammation in Elders.

It’s some kind of procedure or protocol or something.

But, believe it or not, it may have something to do with watermelon juice.

Moxie, the soda, may be a strange taste, but maybe Coca Cola was a strange taste in the beginning.

My brother claims he used to stock Moxie in his fridge at college because nobody would steal it.
