How The 1980s Are Influencing 2023 Style Trends

While Y2K and ‘90s fashion have been big in recent years, ‘80s looks are also making a comeback — particularly for 2023. This year already feels bolder than in years past with bright geometric patterns, dance-inspired looks, and more of those oversized blazers (with or without shoulder pads). Thankfully, not everything is back from the ‘80s, but when it comes to bold, playful statement looks, expect to see a lot of ‘80s influence. Given that fashion often rolls through in 20 year cycles, it’s not surprising we’re seeing the ‘80s popping back up. After all, it’s been 40 years, which means whatever came back in the early ‘00s is coming back through again — but with a new spin. If you want to bring the ‘80s back while still being on-trend (or you’re simply curious), check out these looks.

GETTY IMAGES The ‘80s had their own distinct aesthetic when it came to brightly-colored geometric prints — a trend that carried into the ‘90s and is back again today. In particular, look for jackets with bold colors and geometric designs. Think ski jackets or wind breakers worn as statement pieces.

Bright colors were big in the ‘80s and they’re also big in 2023. What’s also big? The jackets are oversized, often to an exaggerated point. Another aesthetic to keep an eye on is dance-inspired looks, like ‘80s athletic wear with a ballet feel.

I remember loving the mens suits in the eighties. They were inspired by Reagan. I was in my late teens and early twenties and loved dressing up. Lots of young people did. Someone with the Fetterman look would have looked like he was homeless back then.

I wore jeans, boots and tshirts in highschool with flannel shirts in the winter. Still wear the same style.

Fashion... Never understood it. I always went for comfort and practicality.

Brooke Shields was 16 in 1981. That ad campaign caused a BIG uproar when it was launched. Today, this "Tranny Story Hour" campaign all over the country seems to cause far less uproar.

None of those pictures reflect the 80’s.

My 80’s years began with my inservice commissioning to Ensign which was my biggest wardrobe change. But for civies there were Polo shirts, button down shirts from Land's End, Levi 501s, white Reeboks (I actually took up tennis), Topsiders, Bally loafers, Niki Daybreaks, and a Members Only windbreaker. At some point came chinos & Dockers for dress casual and Calvins. The Navy & Marine Corps Exchanges carried most of these, even the Ballys, or I could not have afforded them. Managed a few purchases at Nordstrom but for dress clothes, C&R was much more affordable.

That is what my sister says and refuses to wear paisley now as she did back in the 80s. I like paisley myself.

How about we bring the music and the comedy of the 1980s back?

That was a VASTLY better time. America was a funner, funnier, happier, healthier, stronger and more united country back then.

Mel Brooks and Monty Python were still making movies. Top comedians were Sam Kinison and Rodney Dangerfield.

The Dukes of Hazard was the #1 show on TV for several years running. It featured a car with a big bold Confederate Battle Flag on the roof and a horn that blared Dixie (oh the horror!).

Full Metal Jacket showed people what marine boot camp was really like - or at least had been like in the late 60s/early 70s.

There were action movies where the stars were real men who weren’t afraid to act like actual men.

Ronaldus Magnus was president.

The economy was booming.
