I would have added a cup of cooked rice but I had way too much for the two of us as it was. I would try that the next time.

I would eat a Reuben everyday for lunch if I could. With some sweet potato fries...

Reuben, hot German tater salad and dill pickle.

Flavor heaven.

I made a Reuben sandwich and an iced tea.

I'm open to being invited to your place next year!

>>and I still donโ€™t know

Goes back to the time War of Northern Aggression, Gen Sherman and Reconstruction.

All we were allowed to keep to eat was Black Eyed peas. It was what kept us from starving to death.

โ€œIn southern Pennsylvania, the New Years tradition is sauerkraut.โ€œ

Wifey is from there. She said they had sauerkraut and pork roast. I now have her on peas, hog jowls, collards, and cornbread. She wonโ€™t go back.

My Mom is from there.

Same thing: pork chops and sauer kraut...usually with mashed potatoes.

Tis a tasty meal.

But the Southern one is special...and I am a transplant.

Well, Mr. GG2 forgot to put the grocery bag with the black eyed peas and collards in the cart so hours later when I discovered they didn’t make it home it was too late. I finally managed to find a can of peas out in the garage and made hoppin john but no collards this year. He’s still in the doghouse. ๐Ÿ˜

Of course. Always.

Grow, shell, freeze, enjoy all year. NY Day with left over Christmas ham and bone plus corn bread and pepper sauce.

My wife is a non brliever so I have made emergency runs for canned peas in a pinch on NYD.

All US rig cooks are from the South so they always get it right on NYD.

I did it...
Black eyed peas with smoked ham hocks in the crockpot, fried cabbage with smoked sausage, rice and jalapeno cornbread.
Turned out great, though we will be eating it for days...

Yes, same tradition for us. German heritage. Eating pork on NYD is to bring good luck for the year. And my grandmother always made sauerkraut with dumplings; which I tend to do every NYD I can manage it.

“Goes back to the time War of Northern Aggression, Gen Sherman and Reconstruction.”

This is my understanding. Union forces destroyed, or stole, everything they could readily get their hands on.

The South was impoverished for decades. Poor people eat whatever they can easily grow, in this case black eyed peas.

Douse the peas with banana pepper sauce and they taste very good.

What is Hoppin’ John? I always thought it was my Uncle John after a big bowl of chili.
