High sugar consumption linked to increased risk of premature aging in childhood cancer survivors

Survivors of childhood cancer who consumed more total sugar, added sugar, and sugar-sweetened beverages had more aging-related health conditions than survivors who consumed less sugar.

Children with cancer are often treated with harsh regimens such as chemotherapy and radiation, which can damage growing tissues and cause health problems later. One pattern that researchers have recognized is the propensity for childhood cancer survivors to develop aging-related health conditions at a younger age than the general population.

Lan and colleagues identified 3,322 patients from the St. Jude Lifetime Cohort who provided information about their typical diet using a food frequency questionnaire.

They assessed the survivors' risk of premature aging using the Deficit Accumulation Index (DAI), a collection of 45 aging-related health conditions such as heart attack, stroke, and arthritis. DAI score was assessed as the ratio of existing health conditions to the number of conditions included in the index; survivors with a DAI less than 0.2 were considered low-risk, survivors with a DAI of 0.2–0.34 were considered intermediate-risk, and survivors with a DAI greater than or equal to 0.35 were considered high-risk.

For each 25 grams of sugar consumed per day, survivors in the intermediate-risk group had a 24% increased risk of premature aging, and survivors in the high-risk group had a 30% increased risk of premature aging. Each 25 grams of added sugar increased intermediate-risk survivors' risk by 19% and high-risk survivors' risk by 23%.

The impact of sugar-sweetened beverages on premature aging risk was especially strong for high-risk individuals; those who consumed two or more drinks per day had a 6.71-fold higher risk of premature aging compared to those who consumed less than one drink per week. The increased risk related to sugar-sweetened beverages was 54% among intermediate-risk individuals.

This could be said about all children in general.

Sugary snacks is an okay once in a while but gutting them down by the whole box is just asking for trouble.

I’d say the same thing about meats, vegetables, dairy products.

“Moderation in all things”

Makes perfect sense since cancer cells crave sugar.

I’m afraid so.

Kids when I was growing had candy of course but we also went outside and played. There were the odd kid that was fat and didn’t join in the games but that was his choice.
Junk food was also expensive so we didn’t get alot of it unless we bought it ourselves with the money we earned mowing yards, odd jobs etc.
Nowadays it seems the skinny, active kid is the odd man out and the fatties the general rule.

When I go out to the local mall I always get into my “people watching mode”, an holdover of my “girl watching” days I suppose.
I see more morbidly obese kids with no necks and two, three chins and I wonder how they let themselves get this way.

Then their parents show up and they waddle through the stores, hands full of junk food.
These kids never had a chance.

Moderation in all things, except regular exercise. Only thing to watch for is to not injure any body parts. Which is why mild exercise for longer time is extremely beneficial to extend life.

I read something years ago that the elements that cause cancer are more readily stored in the fat cells if the body and thus they leech into the body at a steady rate. Where’s if a person who was in a more slender frame and exposed to the same toxins, it was more easily eliminated from the body in a timely manner so the damage done wasn’t as critical.
Don’t know if it was true or debunked but made sense at the time.

Premature aging has to be balanced with quality of life. If you told me quitting BBQ would add 10 years to my life what would my response be? You guess.
