NEWPORT, Ore. (KATU) — Police in Oregon said three explosive devices washed ashore Tuesday, prompting several calls to law enforcement.

Police in Newport said they responded to three separate devices that washed up on the beach in the area, between Yaquina Bay State Park and Agate Beach.

Each device was white in color and had a label attached to them that reads “Warning Explosive.” The label clearly states the item is a "Simulator, Hand Grenade M116A," with instructions to "remove safety clip from fuse lighter, carefully pull off cap until cord is free of container."

The Oregon State Police Bomb Squad responded and seized the devices.

HFI Pyrotechnics said, "The Simulator, Hand Grenade is designed for training exercises to acclimatize troops to the sights and sounds of battle in a non-lethal format. This device, once the pull-wire is activated, after 6-12 seconds produces a loud report or simulated explosion of a grenade."

Police said if a beachgoer encounters such a device, do not handle or try to move it. Call 911 and report the location of the device to the police.

Like I'd be able to resist.

Way back in the mid 70s, a sheriff friend pulled over some drunk marines who were out having a good time. Searching the vehicle, he found a bag of simulators they had filched from their training supplies and they were planning to set them off and have fun, no ill-intent. But they being drunk, the officer took the simulators off them and they were in his trunk for a few weeks. He gave them to me, and my brother and I had a blast setting them off and watching them go boom. We were careful and no harm done.

Asinine that the story fails to elaborate on “WHY?” they’re washing up in the first place.

Did they lose a few pallets of something more lethal, too?

Seriously, you expect something reporters are not taught to do any more. They are opinion writers, fear mongers.

Imagine that situation now. Dishonorable Discharge after serving time for domestic terrorism charges.
Current society sucks…

Ahhh! The infamous exploding whale!!!!

I love the original footage-when it explodes, intially you can people exclaiming “Ohh! Ahh! Cool!”

And then, the stinking, rotting, chunks of decayed blubber begin raining down on them (as well as the nasty, stinking vaporized blubber mist) and the exclamations (as people begin running pell mell to frantically escape the putrid rain) change from “Oh, Ahh, Cool!” to “AIEEEEEEE!”

I particularly enjoyed the car-sized chunk of rotting blubber that crushed a car in the parking lot.

I think it is hilarious. The best of government and the media at work.

"...the story fails to elaborate on “WHY?” "

I wondered about that, too. I assume they were part of cache that was "deep-sea disposed" but separated out, or never made it out to the correct disposal site, ("ah heck, this is probably far enough out...")
