Hong Kong offers 500,000 free air tickets to tempt tourists back

Hong Kong attracted around 56 million visitors a year before the pandemic, and now the popular destination is taking significant steps to win tourists back after over two years of some of the world's toughest travel restrictions. Just days after dropping its longstanding mandatory hotel quarantine requirement, Hong Kong has confirmed plans to give away half a million airline tickets in a bid to boost tourism. The move, first announced two years ago, was confirmed to CNN by a spokesperson from the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK), which said that the 500,000 tickets, worth around $254.8 million, would go to global visitors, along with residents. "Back in 2020, Airport Authority Hong Kong purchased around 500,000 air tickets in advance from the territory's home-based airlines as part of a relief package to support the aviation industry," says the spokesperson. "The purchase serves the purpose of injecting liquidity into the airlines upfront, while the tickets will be given away to global visitors and Hong Kong residents in the market recovery campaign."

Sure thing, Xi. A lockdown would strand you there. Zero covid, remember?

I have never thought of Hong Kong as a great vacation destination.

Hong Kong was a cool and fascinating town when the Brits still ruled it. Years ago when I was living in Japan and had a returning business trip home, my flight from Saudi Arabia arrived early in HK and I learned my connecting flight home would be delayed about four hours.

So I had eight hours to spend there, deposited my luggage with the airline and took a bus into town. Lots of cool stuff to see and do at bargain prices. The only real negative was that the town had a faint sewer smell wherever you went.

It would be interesting to say the least, if they
were to offer 500,000 free tickets to Hong Kong residents
if they wanted to leave...

Imagine New York without the criminals and high costs. Imagine New York without the liberals and lunatics which promote the criminals and high costs. That was Hong Kong back in the mid 1990s.

People love freedom and prosperity it brings but loathe and despise dictatorships and poverty it brings.

Nobody wants to go to a country oppressed by a bloody regime. Who needs to spend their time and money going there?

It is the dirty harbor that adjoins it. The smell is still there, sometimes worse in the summer. Otherwise it is something of a colonial time capsule, but I would not call it a tourist destination. Too humid, too crowded, well maintained, and plush business hotels.

If they scrap the zero covid policy, maybe I’ll consider it.

Probably assembled by a family owned fabrication firm on the mainland and finished in Hong Kong so they could get the coveted stamp.

I had R&R in Hong Kong back in 67.
Incredible city and the most beautiful women in the world.
I had a pair of eye glasses made while I waited, something
that didn’t hit the US for years.

It’d be my luck somebody on my flight to HK would come down with COVID...and the Chinese military would weld the doors closed on the airplane.

I have never thought of Hong Kong as a great vacation destination.

Under British rule, Hong Kong -- including Kowloon and the New Territories -- was a wide open, freewheeling city, a bastion of pure capitalism. You could get anything you wanted, day or night and on short notice. Made a number of port calls when in the U.S. Navy, and had only one bad experience (foolishly drank the local water and paid for it.)

I was there for the handover teaching a class on how to sell frame relay. Saw the Chinese roll in. Nice place big celebration at the time. Aye on the jumbo boat. It was raining like heck but clear up enough to go diving in the south China sea.

I don’t think the Chinese would let me in now given all the trouble I have caused them over the years.

Free sounds good, but how much per night for lodging?

10 or 15 years ago I could have gone to China all expenses paid (I forget where) for a week or 2

I asked my boss who was from China and She looked horrified.

She said ‘no one should go there’, but that she would approve it I was really so stupid.
