Sinema raises concerns about proposed tax in Democrats’ bill as lobbying intensifies for her vote

CNN - Republican senators and the business community are mounting a full-court press on Sen. Kyrsten Sinema to sink – or substantially change – the Democrats’ economic package, arguing in private conversations that the new tax increases would hurt companies in her home state of Arizona.

And in a private call with business groups on Tuesday, Sinema asked a question about the bill’s proposed 15% minimum tax on corporations that gave them some hope for optimism.

“Is this written in a way that’s bad?” Sinema asked, according to Danny Seiden, president of the Arizona Chamber of Commerce, who relayed the call to CNN.

“It gave me hope that she’s willing to open this up and maybe make it better,” Seiden said.

Sinema’s office declined to comment about the call. But she has expressed concerns about other tax provisions as well – namely on raising taxes on so-called carried interest, which would impact private equity and hedge fund managers, and raise $14 billion in the Democrats’ bill. Sinema has relayed to top Democrats that she wants that provision out of the bill, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Sinema, the lone holdout among the 50-member Senate Democratic Caucus and who was blindsided by news of the deal last week, has refused to tip her hand one way or the other on the bill – giving conservative critics of the bill reason to believe they could convince her to change her mind. Democrats are still confident that they can win her over but also acknowledge that they may have to make some changes – particularly over the tax provisions – to get her to “yes.”

But as she’s been in talks with Democrats who have touted the bill’s benefits, Republicans like Senate Minority Whip John Thune have expressed concerns...

I’m not that smart but I look for patterns and connections. Didn’t Nanzi Pelosi just cut a deal with Taiwan to bring a chip factory to .... wait for it.....ARIZONA? Is this the payoff Sinema needs to tip the balance?

Her decision will be dependent upon the outcome of Kari Lake’s primary. Sinema knows she’s dead in the water if Lake wins UNLESS she wins over enough R’s to keep her. She’s been doing an excellent job of that thus far. Hell, even I have begrudging respect for her. If she thinks Lake is going to be the next governor, she may well come down on our side.

Two large microchip factories are already being built in Arizona.

They are expected to start production in 2024.

She will fold.

She's a very enigmatic tough cookie though. I think what will happen is that she'll cut the corporate tax to 10% and ensure that the Dems follow through first on all of the things Manchin wanted, like opening up the pipeline through WV and loosening restrictions on drilling. She's taking longer than necessary to go through this so that's good.

Manchin just completely got hosed, and I think Sinema saw that and is being more cautious.

What does it tell you that Schumer and Manchin want it rammed through so fast? I had no idea Schumer is worth $69 million. Needs to hire Nancy’s stockbroker.

Corporations should add the tax as a line item on top of the price of each product they sell. Let the buyer be reminded every time they buy something that the Democrats added another 15% tax (on top of the state/local sales tax).

If she holds fast, I will vote for her when she runs.
I think last nights election may encourage her to think very hard.

She seems to have more brains than many of those in office.
