If British scientists have their way, two medium-sized tomatoes a day could keep the doctor away.
A research team led by scientists at the John Innes Centre in Norwich have edited the genetic makeup of tomatoes to become a robust source of vitamin D, which regulates nutrients like calcium that are imperative to keeping bones, teeth and muscles healthy.
Although vitamin D is created in our bodies after exposure to sunlight, its major source is food, largely in dairy and meat.

I thought they would not eat GMO produce?
Just read a new study says eggs are good for you. I was told long ago they would kill me. Still here at 72.
Um. Scurvy, Vitamin C. Rickets; Vitamin D.
Vitamin D2 has been around for years and is plant-based. It’s sourced from yeast or mushrooms.
Just tell vegans to step out into the sun sometimes for their vitamin D. They tend to be anti-GMO so probably wont be eating these anyway.
Just what we need. Naked vegans out in the sunshine getting their Vit D.
I get mine from bacon and tomato sandwiches.
Scurvy is from lack of Vitamin C, rickets are from lack of Vitamin D. Berberi is from lack of B1, and pellagra is from lack of B3.
What if you hate tomatoes and think they taste moldy ,LOL
I’m not eating GMO anything and neither is my cat.
As for Vitamin D—sit in the sun for 15 minutes every other day. Or, take a supplement. I buy Carlson’s Norwegian Cod Liver Oil, lemon flavored, take it every morning in fall, winter, and spring. D3 is available in any price range. Supermarkets have it.
Still ****ed on the B12 though.
If your dietary plan is so out of balance you need a GMO tomato, maybe you bet on the wrong horse.
Tell the vegans to go eat a steak and stop wasting resources on their wackadoodle religion.
Your skin will produce vitamin d from the ultra violet sprectrum of sunlight. As well, your skin will produce melatonin and nitric oxide from the infra red spectrum of sunlight.
The big problem around the world is that people are not getting outside enough. Our bodies are not designed to live without sunlight any more than plants are designed to live without sunlight.
No, thank you.
