Tim Anderson accused Josh Donaldson of making a racist comment on Saturday that nearly ignited a benches-clearing brawl, but the Yankees third baseman said he believes the White Sox shortstop took his words the wrong way.
After the Yankees’ 7-5 victory at the Stadium, Anderson said Donaldson used the phrase, “What’s up, Jackie?” multiple times to him during the game. Donaldson’s response was that he has jokingly called Anderson “Jackie” (as in Jackie Robinson) in the past because the infielder referred to himself in 2019 as “today’s Jackie Robinson.”
“He just made a disrespectful comment. He was trying to call me Jackie Robinson, ‘What’s up Jackie?’ ” Anderson, who is Black, said. “I don’t play like that. … That happened the first time he got on, and I let it go that time, and it happened again. It’s just uncalled for.”
Later, Anderson said: “I’ll never sleep this off.”
Donaldson did not deny the remark, referring to a 2019 Sports Illustrated story in which Anderson compared himself to the legendary Jackie Robinson.
“I called him Jackie. He came out with an interview that says he’s the new Jackie Robinson … We’ve actually joked about that,” Donaldson said. “I’ve said it to him in years past, not in any manner [other] than just joking around.”

I remember reading that Pete Rose said he thought Dave Concepcion’s first name was Elmer, because every time Rose looked at the box scores in the newspaper, he always saw “E-Concepcion”. Guess the players today don’t have a sense of humor.
If Donaldson was sincerely comparing him to JR, one of the greatest Major League Baseball players of all time, it would have been fine. It’s because Donaldson was being snarky that there is an issue. So this is not racism, it’s within the normal range of trash talking.
Donaldson is kind of a jackass, but this seems completely unfair to him. Surprised that Anderson is such a snowflake. Both are All-Star type players.
If Biden started calling himself the new George Washington he’d get ridiculed 24/7. That’s absurdity for some practically no-name player I’ve never heard of referring himself to one of the most talented and significant players in the history of the game.
I am no south side fan but I can name several White Sox players. Anderson is not one of them.
Men would take care of things like this just between them and not involve the public.
Anderson interviewed by SI and said he wanted to be like Jackie Robinson and Donaldson teased him by calling him Jackie. Big f’n deal. Anderson better get a thicker skin because fans all over will be calling him Jackie

Like opposing fans chanting ‘Margo’ at Wade Boggs, throwing small inflatable toy trash cans on the field for the Astros, and throwing syringes (without needles) at players caught using steroids.
And I’m sure there are other examples. Way back when, fans throwing marshmallows on the field at Billy Martin (there’s an obscure reference!).
Anderson is no Jackie Robinson.
Anderson would have gotten into a fight at the first racist insult he got—in a day when the racist insults were in your face—no subtle references.
Then he would have been kicked out of baseball.

Can you imagine how he’d react if Donaldson called him “Brandon”?
Why does Anderson consider himself like Jackie Robinson?
Why would they call Boggs Margo? I thought they would throw chicken at him because Boggs claims that hes eaten chicken for every meal his entire life since the day he was born.
