Alec Baldwin ‘Rust’ camera crew walked off the set in protest before the fatal shooting
LA Times ^ | Meg James

Labor trouble had been brewing for days on the dusty set at the Bonanza Creek Ranch near Santa Fe.

The cinematographer who was accidentally killed, Halyna Hutchins, had been advocating for safer conditions for her team, said one crew member who was on the set.

As the camera crew — members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees — spent about an hour assembling their gear at the Bonanza Creek Ranch, several nonunion crew members showed up to replace them, the knowledgeable person said.

A member of the producer staff then ordered the union members to leave the set. She said if they didn’t leave, the producers would call security to remove them.

“Corners were being cut — and they brought in nonunion people so they could continue shooting,” the knowledgeable person said.

There were two misfires on the prop gun on Saturday and one the previous week, the person said, adding “there was a serious lack of safety meetings on this set.”

The shooting occurred about six hours after the union camera crew left.

Baldwin, the film’s star who also served as a producer on the film, was apparently rehearsing a scene outside the church of the Bonzana Creek Ranch set...

The scene involved a gun fight that began in the church, and then Baldwin’s character was supposed to back out of the church, according to production notes obtained by The Times. It was the 12th day of a 21-day shoot.

I have not read the LAT article, only the excerpt, but if the deceased was a member of the union, and the excerpt says :The shooting occurred about six hours after the union camera crew left” then how was she still there to be shot?

so how did one person get dead and another get hospitalized?

———————————————

One single shot was fired. It obviously was not a blank. The bullet went through Hutchins then struck Sousa the Director.

Hutchins died in route to the hospital.

I love these threads to observe how people analyze these things.

There are no “prop” guns. They are real guns which sometimes have real ammo or blanks depending on the shoot. Real ammo is sometimes used in movies.

Stage prop crew should have quadruple checks on this stuff. Hard to believe this was an oversight but is certainly possible.

I’ll bet ole jackass barwin never thought he would be in a Columbo episode.

Idiot killed a woman. His libtard ass has killed more in his lifetime than 99% of gun owners in the USA.

Lock him up.

First rule of gun safety: treat all guns as if they are loaded.
Second rule: Never point a gun at anything you aren’t ready to kill.

I used to live in a town that did an Old West shootout reenactment every year. Blanks were used of course but each actor who fired a gun was responsible for checking their weapon and the bullets to ensure no live ammo could be fired. Every actor who touches a gun should know how to tell blanks from live ammo and should be responsible for the real guns they fire when acting. You pull the trigger, it's on you. The crew person might have accidentally loaded a live bullet, OR missed a real bullet that had been accidentally left in the gun! No one has thought of that, have they? The idiot also broke this important rule: Never point a gun (even an 'unloaded' one) at anyone you don't intend to imminently kill. He should have had those people moved out of his line of fire even for shooting blanks! The crew person made one of two possible mistakes, Baldwin made two. He should be sued as well as charged. Negligence leading to death is the lowest possible level of crime he committed. Or, did Baldwin sneak the live bullet in and kill the victim on purpose? The Police have work to do before they close this case.

You forget his infamous damning tweet where he wondered what it would be like to kill someone.

The story says one round killed one and injured another. It killed the woman and injured the man. It passed through her.

To: BenLurkin; max americana

As a former Producer, I didn’t work in the industry to the degree that Freeper Max Americana does, but I’d love to get his take on all of this. I’ve only dealt with union techs a few times, but many of them were little bitches with chips on their shoulders. However, from 9-5, they worked hard. Anyway, with compelling evidence, I can easily believe some passive/aggressive crap being served up, here.

Bruce Lee was killed by a movie mishap with a firearm. They use rounds with the bullet attached in the gun in some scenes so the gun appears loaded. In the Bruce Lee incident, they removed the powder from the cartridge, but not the primer, someone fired the primer which drove the projectile into the barrel where it lodged. They then replaced those rounds with blanks for realistic gunfire sound. When the first blank went off it went off with enough pressure to propel the bullet out of the barrel which struck and killed Bruce Lee. I’m guessing this will turn out to be something like that.

Most prop guns are real guns. “Prop” means only that it is being used by an actor in a movie or play, short for “stage property”. It does not mean that the object being used as a prop, whether a gun or anything else, is necessarily an imitation of a real object.
